Sham visits flood affected areas of Akhnoor | Directs engineers for concrete steps to prevent soil erosion | | early times report JAMMU, Sept 12: Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma today undertook an extensive tour of flood affected areas located along the right bank of river Chenab in Akhnoor and assessed the situation arisen due to flash floods. Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, Jammu, B.R.Dogra, Additional District Development Commissioner, Jammu, D.R.Sharma and SDM, Akhnoor, Ashok Sharma accompanied the Minister. After visiting several locations, the Minister directed the Chief Engineer to undertake immediate repairs of vulnerable spots to stop further damage to the agricultural land, adding that the repair works should be carried out on war-footing basis in view of the alarming situation. He also directed the engineers to chalk out a firm strategy to channelize the water at the right bank of Chenab river where many areas face flood threats during the rainy months. During the course of visit, the Minister was apprised by the locals that several acres of agricultural land along with standing paddy crops has been washed away in recent flash floods and Chenab river water is still causing lot of damage to the agricultural land and standing crops. They demanded appropriate compensation for the land and crops from the Government and also sought immediate measures to plug the gaps to prevent further loss. Sharma assured the people that Government would take all necessary steps to prevent further damage to the agricultural land. Regarding compensation, he said that Government would get assessed the actual loss and take suitable decision accordingly. |
