'A Kashmiri now costs Rs 2500'
An 80-year-old widow and her valuable cheque
9/13/2010 12:14:50 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 12: The Mirwaiz's motorcade came to a screeching halt outside her dingy hut in Batmaloo on September 9. A group of Mirwaiz Hurriyat workers came out of their cars and entered the hut. The old widow was humbled and welcomed the unexpected guests. After making themselves comfortable, a senior worker wearing a black waistcoat and a neat Khan suit pulled out an envelope from his pocket. He handed it over to the widow. She took the envelope and opened it with curiosity. A piece of paper came out. The widow looked at it from all directions. Unable to make out what it actually was, the widow asked him what it was all about.
"Mouji (mother) it is a cheque worth Rs 2500. It is for you", the worker failed to clear the widow's doubts. She had seen the cheque for the first time in her life and, therefore, did not know what to do with it. Further explaining was needed. The worker told her to go to the bank next morning and get it cashed.
Next day was a Friday and Eid shoppers thronged the banks. The old lady did not found anybody to accompany her. The cheque is still with her and she hates what she now calls a "use less piece of paper."
The lady got the cheque like fifteen others in the Batmaloo locality who lost their relatives during the on-going agitation. Alas! The cheque did not serve any purpose. Despite this ` valuable piece of paper' the widow remained high and dry on Eid.
A neighbour severely criticized Mirwaiz's `noble gesture'. "If help does not solve your problems, it is no help", he said. "The Mirwaiz should have sent cash to the widow. How did he expect an eighty-year-old widow to go to the bank to cash a cheque", he questioned.
Another neighbour passed a sarcastic remark. "A Kashmiri now costs Rs 2500. This means his price has gone up considerably", he said.
When asked why he did not get the cheque cashed for the widow, he had a handy answer. "I did not know she has a cheque. Further people are so busy on the occasion of Eid", he said.
