Fundamentalist organization fanning trouble in Kashmir valley | Political patting of miscreants demoralizing: Officials | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 12: While virtually besieged Jammu and Kashmir government is unable to explore options for controlling violent mobs across Kashmir valley, fundamentalists and forces controlled by elements from across line of control (LOC) are having a field day, rampaging, ransacking and burning down both private and government property. These are assertions and observations of police and intelligence sources, with regard to complete lawlessness across Kashmir valley. They further say that with 'moral and emotional support' pouring in from political rivals of National Conference (NC), which is in power, situation is likely to further deteriorate in the days ahead. These officials do accept that patting on the back of miscreants by mainstream political parties after they indulge in act of arsons and rioting does not help. Seeking anonymity, an official said that state government has reliable inputs of the involvement of some fundamentalist organizations, which are being aided and abetted by extremists from across the line of control. He added that crowds are being effectively managed only because of the manner in which that particular fundamentalist organization is rooted across Kashmir valley. They further say that the organization had been expanding its base across Kashmir valley since the last ten years but government both at centre and the state preferred discreet silence over taking action over the intelligence reports which had been pouring in from districts of Anantnag, Sopore, Srinagar, Baramullah and certain pockets of Kupwara. Sources averred that the organization managed to rejuvenate its cadre. They added that one of these organizations has close-links with firebrand separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani while most of the students; youth and separatist leaders draw their inspiration from this particular organization. Sources confirmed that state has been unable to crack whip on the leaders and office bearers of this organization. Sources further said that mobs come well-planned and engage police and security forces first in stone-pelting and later, when the situation goes out of control, they indulge in rampaging, ransacking and burning down both private and government property. "It is well-organised and planned. Arson and loot cannot be justified even if there are people who have genuine reason to protest," said an official. He added that if someone's rights are being violated, he has every reason to lodge peaceful protest. "But right from June 11, 2010 to this day, mobs have indulged in stone-pelting, arson, loot and carried out extreme acts of violence forcing security forces to retaliate. No sane person would justify killings but at the same time, also cannot turn a blind eye towards mob violence of the kind which we are witnessing," asserted officials. Not only this, if police sources are to be believed, gun trotting youngsters have begun finding space in the so-called 'peaceful' demonstrations organised mainly by leaders, workers and members of more than 70 separatist organizations operating from lanes and by lanes of Srinagar city and Anantnag district. Citing an example, they said that on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, celebrated across the Kashmir valley on September 11, militants mixed up with crowds and fired shots at the security forces near village Hathi Shah in district Sopore. Police sources maintain that a single gunshot was followed by volley of bullets. They asserted that fortunately, there were no injuries in this incident. Police in another handout claimed that militants have become part and parcel of the plans for the disturbance of the peace in the valley. They said that about half a dozen times, incidents of firing and grenade throwing have been reported from Sopore alone. Police sources said that grenades were lobbed at Hathi Shah Bridge and Chankhan about one and a half month ago, gun shots were fired from mobs twice at main Chowk Sopore, once in Kapra Theatre area, once on police station Sopore and once from the crowd at Bomia. Police has also claimed that at Palhalan, someone fired from crowd injuring Station House Officer (SHO) Pattan while adding that militants are also moving alongwith crowds at many other places including Hajan and Sumbal area. They term that the trend is dangerous while adding that presence of militants in the crowd is aimed at further compounding the mess by forcing both police and security forces to retaliate. "They know retaliation would lead to killings and hence provide an opportunity to human rights activists, feminists, intellectuals and certain section of press to put the entire blame on security forces. None looks at the other side of the coin and finds it more convenient to talk about crowds being fired at and rubbish claims of police and security forces as unfounded lies," asserted the officials. |
