| All-India strike disrupts banking services | | | New Delhi, Oct 27 People queued up before ATMs for cash as banking services were disrupted across the country in a one-day strike by over a million employees against outsourcing of jobs. Clearing operations were paralyzed in the commercial capital Mumbai as the agitating employees under the banner of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) comprising nine unions stayed away from work. Employees of all public sector banks are participating in the strike. The strike also affected foreign banks like the Standard Chartered, American Express, Bank of Tokyo and HSBC and private banks such as IDBI Bank and Bank of Rajasthan. Ironically, the strike against outsourcing did not prevent bank clients from withdrawing cash from ATMs, an already outsourced work of most of the banks. ''We don't disturb the functioning of ATMs. The work of ATMs is outsourced by banks,'' said Ramanand, Joint Secretary, All India Bank Employees' Associations, a constituent of UFBU. |
