early times report
JAMMU, Sept 13: Abhinav Theatre meant for promoting art and culture in Jammu region is in dilapidated condition and no cultural event in past more than three months was held during monsoon season in the region. Remarkably, infrastructure inside the campus is considerably damaged due percolation of rain water from roof and it will also take considerable time for revival of cultural events in the Abhinav Theatre.
Because of dilapidated condition of the theatre, hopes of the artists from Jammu region hang up in mid air from at least past two months. Meanwhile, all the main activities of art and cultural used to be held over there, but from last two months there has not been conducted any program and activity in the theatre. Many activities were held in the adjoining K L Saigal Hall with far less capacity. Recently a "Meet the Eminent Personality" of noted writer and Padma Shri awardee Dr Jatinder Udhampuri had to be shifted to KL Sehgal Hall. Pertinently, the roof of the Abhinav Theatre was in dilapidated condition from past few years, but due to deficiency in the monsoon from past few years covered the worrisome condition under carpet. Incessant monsoon rains this year exposed all the loopholes of the academy.
People related to art and culture has expressed concern ove the dismal picture of once state of art cultural hub of Jammu. Many artists of the state said that we were hoping for the repairs of the theatre as precious time is already wasted because of the closure of the Abhinav Theatre. In 1978 Abhinav Theatre, Jammu, named after the great scholar and an authority on Sanskrit Drama, Acharya Abhinav Gupta, was inaugurated in Jammu. The Abhinav Theatre was got air-conditioned in the year 1998. Many nationally and internationally acclaimed artists of the country had performed in the Abhinav Theatre and still it is one of the cultural hubs of the winter capital.
Secretary, Jammu Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages Zaffar Iqbal Manhas could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
