Out of convenience moderates emulate hawks in Kashmir | | | Out of convenience instead of conviction the moderates in the separatists camp in the Kashmir valley seem to have started adopting the role of the hardliners. Whether they imitate hawks or not the moderates seem to be dead set to oppose anything that the state Government or the centre decide or offer. The pro-hawk stance has been adopted by the moderates in order to enable them to see their writ runs in Kashmir. It is in this context that the moderates, headed by Molvi Umar Farooq, sent to of his party colleagues to Syed Ali Shah Geelani to accept their offer for forging unity. The latest instances to prove the obduracy on the part of the moderates are the way APHC Chief, Molvi Umar Farooq, incited people to violence when he directed them that they should march, after Eid prayers in Eidgah on Saturday,to Lal Chowk where they should stage demonstration and dharna and their reaction to the announcement of the state Government on appointing a two-member judicial commission for probing into the circumstances that led to the killing of 17 youths in the firing opened by the security forces in Kashmir between June 11 and middle of July. And the Government had no other alternative but to file a case against the Mirwaiz for inciting people to violence. The Maulana should have welcomed the judicial inquiry so that the commission will unravel the factors behind the violence and establish whether the police firing was called for or not. If it was not called for who were the officers who had ordered security personnel to open fire on the protesting crowds. But separatists need to realise that whenever violence erupts, deaths tak place and when there is largescale turmoil it is necessary for the Government to institute a commission for probing intothe incidents and fix responsibility on those who were behind the trouble or behind firing on the protesters. And if the state Government has set up a judicial commission it needs to be welcomed and appreciated. The Government has not entrusted the task of carrying out a probe to retired or nservice bureaucrats.Had it done so separatists could smell motives. But by giving the job of probing into the incidents of violence and police firing to two retired high court judges,Justice Bashir-ud-Din,and Justice Y.P.Nargotra the Government has lent sanctity the the entire exercise on finding what went wrong and who were responsible for the deaths. After having moved from the moderate camp to the camp of hawks Chairman All Party Hurriyat Conference,Molvi Umar Farooq, described the Government decision on appointing a judicial commission for probing into the circusmtances that led to the killing of 17 people as an "eye-wash".The reaction is not only amazing but shocking.Instead of appreciating the Government announcement the Maulana ridiculed it.Possibly he did so to keep the hawks and the militants in good humour. The Maulana is intelligent and he must have read the pulse of those supporting separatists when he found that the effigies of Syed Salahuddin,Chief of Muzaffarabad based United Jehad Council, opposed the prolonged shutdown and protest rallies. The protesters did not even spare the leaders of Jamait-e-Islami who had favoured end to the current spell of violence and shutdown. In order to keep his political face beaming he said talks with the separatists could be resumed only after all the detained political leaders were set free, AFSPA was repealed, troops were withdrawn and those youths who had been arrested on charge of pelting stones on the security force be released. Before the rise of the current turmoil in Kashmir Maulana and his colleagues in the APHC were keen to see the Delhi-separatists talks being resumed. They are now reluctant after they find people enraged and determined to fight for azadi. If the separatists consider themselves as the political face of the ongoing movement for liberation they need to adopt a democratic process of holding talks with the Government of India and project their views on various political, constitutional and security related matters. By adopting a policy of isolationism they were endangering people of Kashmir and harming their cause,if they have any genuine one. Let them come forward and engage themselves in the battle of wits and words with the mainstream political leaders and Delhi. |
