| Bollywood's sex siren enriched by period film | | Acting in Umra Jaan quite rewarding: Aishwarya | | B L KAK NEW DELHI, OCT. 27: Come November 3, much-awaited Bollywood film, Umrao Jaan, will be released. And the sex siren, Aishwarya Rai, has let it be known that her acting in Umrao Jaan, a period film, has been an incredible and educational journey into a rich cultural world of the past. The beautiful actress, who has been working on a string of projects both in India and Hollywood, has placed herself on record, saying: "For someone working in Dhoom-2, who is part of today's generation and is always on a high over Indian culture, Umrao Jaan has reconnected me on a deeper level to our culture and I have come away enriched". She was speaking at an interaction with the mediapersons along with the film's producer and director J.P. Dutta at the launch of the film's video on Reliance Mobile World accessible to over 26 million customers. "The film shows the rich contribution of the minority community to the arts, in India as well as the world," said Dutta, when asked if Urdu, a language spoken by Muslims would be of relevance in today's atmosphere. Dutta said: "Hindustani, which united the country, is a language derived from Urdu. Today's Hindi cinema is an offshoot of Urdu theatre in Lahore. Also included in their contribution should be poetry, music and instruments like the sarangi and tabla". The film has aroused nationwide curiosity since the 1981 film Umrao Jaan, starring Rekha, has been much admired. Dutta stoutly says his film is not a remake but based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa's book. Any comparison irritates him and he snaps back with, "Romeo and Juliet has been made into a film several times. Does anyone question whether the film has been remade? That is because it is Shakespeare." Aishwarya Rai confessed to the media that she is now better versed in Urdu, mujra (dance) and ghazals and thanked Dutta for giving her a chance to "essay the character of Umrao Jaan," a 19th century talented courtesan of Lucknow. She pronounced: "This film is entirely Dutta's in which, for the first time, I get to play a courtesan's role". ===========================
