| INFANTRY DAY celebrated | | | Udhampur, Oct 27, 2006 The Northern Command of the Indian Army celebrated the 59th Anniversary of Infantry Day, today. A solemn Wreath laying ceremony was held at the Command War Memorial where wreath was laid by Lt Gen Rajender Singh, SM, VSM, Chief of Staff, Northern Command. The ceremony was held to pay tribute to those gallant soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives, in service of the Nation in Jammu and Kashmir. While speaking on the occasion Lt Gen Rajender Singh, SM, VSM, conveyed his greetings to all ranks of Infantry and exhorted all infantrymen to strive for excellence in all fields of activities. He lauded the role played by all infantry units in fighting the proxy war and in our efforts to bring normalcy in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier, a special Sainik Sammelan and a Barakhana was held by the Station Commander. A social function was held in the evening wherein the veterans of the Infantry also graced the occasion. The Chief Guest in the function was Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC, General Officer Commanding in Chief Northern Command. Perseverance in the face of heavy odds, selfless devotion to duty, humility in victory and their supreme sacrifice to the call of duty is what makes the Infantry, the most indispensable arm of the Army. The State of Jammu and Kashmir and Infantry Day enjoy a unique and an unprecedental bond. It was on this momentous day in 1947, that in response to the signing of the Instrument of Accession by the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, the first contingent of the Indian Army landed at Srinagar airfield and resolutely defended Srinagar from Pakistani tribal raiders who had subjected the people of the State to rape, loot and murder. It is to commemorate this gallant action of the Infantry and the Indian Army that 27 October is celebrated as the Infantry Day.
On this auspicious occasion, the infantrymen of the Northern Command rededicated themselves to the service of the Nation and reaffirmed their resolve to work for peace, prosperity and development in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
