‘Papa don't preach; I am in trouble’ | Omar decides not to quit | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 14: Putting all speculations to rest, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today made clear that he would not resign. Omar, it seems, has followed his Papa's counsel yet again who wants him to remain glued to the chair despite all odds. Papa has shifted loyalties very often to stay in power. And, this is what he wants his son to follow. According to insiders, Omar Abdullah had planned to resign in July when the situation became unmanageable for him. However, his Papa and senior colleagues prevented the `miscarriage'. Dismayed over the CCS meeting at New Delhi yesterday, Omar held a cabinet meeting at his residence in the evening. Sources said a disappointed Omar expressed his desire to quit as New Delhi based television channels talked about `governance deficit' and `trust deficit' repeatedly. Expressing his views on NDTV, a less known National Conference leader, Ratanpuri accused New Delhi of taking Kashmiris for a ride. "You threw our autonomy document into the bin without going through it. The Chief Minister was hopeful of a positive response over repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) but the inconclusive CCS meet disappointed him." Ratanpuri also hinted at major political changes in the state within the next two days. "We are waiting for our patron, Dr Farooq Abdullah. As soon as he arrives in Srinagar we will meet and chalk out future strategy", he said. The statement smacked of a possible change of guard in the state. But, this afternoon Omar said he will not quit. But even if Omar quits will it solve the problem? The answer came from Mirwaiz Umer Farooq who heads his own version of Hurriyat Conference. "We are not talking about governance deficit. Kashmiris do not want a change of guard in the state. The problem has to be perceived in its historic perspective", he said. The Mirwaiz, therefore, made it clear that change of guard will not end the protests. "The protests shall continue till the demands we have put forth are met", he said. Pertinent to mention, the Mirwaiz like Syed Ali Geelani has put forth four demands which include demilitarization and repeal of AFSPA and Public Safety Act (PSA). Omar Abdullah, who according to majority of the people, is not cut out for the job he is performing now would have done a favour to him by stepping down. But his Papa wants him to remain in the chair. Omar must be chanting: "Papa don't preach; I am in trouble". |
