Udhampur boys retain U-19 kabaddi title

JAMMU, Sep 15: Beating the equally good side of Jammu district 38-51, Udhampur boys, mostly from SAI Training Centre (STC), today retained the title in the three-day inter-district divisional level under-19 kabaddi tournament held under the banner of Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at Youth Hostel Nagrota fields, near here.
Jammu boys fought back in the second half of the game, but it was too late to recover from the early lead taken by Udhampur in the first session of the well contested final. Lagging behind by 15 (11-26) points in the first half, Jammu boys put in some extra efforts to salvage a win, but only secure a two (27-25) points lead in the second half. From Jammu, Deepak, Mohd Sadiq, Mohan Singh and Chanderveer played well while Manmeet Singh remained start attraction from winners district Udhampur.
Kathua beat Doda to win girls trophy
Earlier, in the girls' final, district Kathua clinched the winners' trophy outplaying fighting Doda girls 25-19. Though Doda girls were leading by three points at the end of first session of the summit clash, but could not maintain the tempo and lost the game making a meek surrender in the second session.
Leading by three points (14-11) in the first half, Doda girls were trailing by six points when the final whistle was blown by the table referee. Nasim Akhtar, Shakura Begam and Dolly were superb as raiders and catchers from Kathua. From Doda, Pooja Kumari, Heena Showkat and Nusarat Tabassum as also Ahiana Bano played well.
Last year district Rajouri won the girls trophy beating Samba in the final. But this time, Rajouri did not turn-up for the event while Samba lost at the semi-finals stages.
Today's matches were officiated by Mohan Singh, Ram Murti Sharma, Tilak Raj Sharma, Gulbir Singh, Kulbir Singh, Bua Ditta, Regubir Singh, Rattan Lal Sharma, Ashok Kumar, Jasdev Singh, Rampual, Mousmi Verma, Jyoti Sharma and Tarsem Singh.
In the finals and prize distribution function, Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau was chief guest who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also medals to first two position holders.
Speaking to the teams, Prof Singh termed sports as the only medium by which an individual can keep himself fit both mentally and physically. He complimented both teams played the finals of boys and girls sections considering their fighting spirit. "I have seen that in the first half one team dominated while in the other session, another played well making it clear that both sides played equal game," said the chief guest. Earlier, Deputy Director DYSS, S S Bali welcomed the special invitees and presented a brief note of the tournament. Among others present were Assistant Director DYSS, Ashok Kumar and senior volleyball coach of JU, Romesh Sharma.
