Separatists need to defuse Kashmir crisis
9/15/2010 11:59:26 PM
The level of violence witnessed in the Kas hmir valley, where 17 people were killed in the firing opened by the security forces on Tuesday, while they were protesting against the desecration of the Holy Quran by an individual in the United states clealry indicates the level of sensitivity of the people in the valley.Even the remote district of Poonch too registered arson and violence over the desecration of the holy Book.Kashmiris are so sensitive to events that go against their conscience and faith that they are prepared to kill and get killed. When former Prime Minister of Pakistan,Z.A.Bhutto,was executed in 1979 the city of Srinagar and other towns witnessed violence and arson while they were protesting against his execution. In one day nine people were killed in police firing outside the premises of the UN Military Observers Group in Srinagar. Kashmir has been known for its wave culture. In 1979 it was anti-Pakistan wave that swept the valley for not more than a week. And after one week it was all peace and there were no anti-Zia ul Haq slogans being raised in Kashmir. The problem in Kashmir is that neither any religious nor any political leaders are in a capacity to mould or influence the opinion of the people of the valley. No religious leader or a politician of any hue has the capacity to motivate people against indulging in violence and arson. The provocation has been quite serious.Desecration of the holy Quran cannot be tolerated by any man or woman who believes in the supremacy of the Holy Book. But there are ways for condemning the act. There are alternatives for giving vent to the bruised feelings and that too when the act of sacrilege had been committed by an individual whose mental instability has been established beyond any doubt. Demonstrations against the sacrilege were held in various parts of the world but nowhere protesters fell to the police bullets because these demonstrations were orderly and an expression of grief rather than anger. The sacrilege had neither been committed by any nation nor by any community or association. Still the US Government should have initiated steps to prevent the man from committing the sacrilege. Hence one important lesson from Tuesday's violence needs to be learnt by the state and the Central Government. This is needed because of the impending court decision on the Ram Janam Bhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute. The dispute has, over the years, kicked up communal tension and conflict. One has to take all possible measures to prevent Kashmir registering a new wave of violence if the Court decision is upalatable to them.Atleast people in Kashmir should know it fully well that both parties have shown faith in the court and have decided to abide by the court decision. India is known for its strong democratic institutions and the courts being one of the pillars of democracy in the country. Since the Supp orters of Ram temple and those favouring reconstruction of the Babri Masjid failed to settle the issue and even the Government dared not to intervene and interfere it was thought better to refer the issue to the court. Reports said that the learned judges have heard the arguments from both sides and one expects a decision that is likely to satisfy both the sides.Still nothing can be said about people in Kashmir who could be incited to indulge in arson and violence against the Court verdict.Hence some of the demands dished out by Omar and the separatists need to be concedeed which could scale down the level of anger in Kashmir. It is very essential for the separatists to rise to the occasion and work for defusing the level of crisis and anger so that no more lives are lost.
