early times report
SRINAGAR, Sep 15: The upgradation of Srinagar International Airport is nearing completion and all the air services will resume from Srinagar airport with effect from September 17, day after tomorrow said an official spokesman.
The repairs and upgradation of the Airport which were earlier slated to be taken up in May, 2010, were rescheduled in larger public interest in the context of the summer tourist season. Accordingly it was decided to take up the work only from September 3rd, 2010; spread upto September 16, 2010 he said.
It may be recalled that the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah had himself spoken to Union Defence Minister and Civil Aviation Minister for operationalizing Awantipora Airport from September 3rd so that the people did not have to face any kind of inconvenience, in view of the holy month of Ramdan and the Eid festival.
Accordingly, all necessary arrangements were made at Awantipora for keeping the air operations going between 3rd to 12th September, 2010,
However, in view of the difficulties faced by the passengers in view of the obtaining law and order situation causing flight delays and resulting into long waiting hours for the passengers, the State Government took a conscious decision to suspend air operations for 3 days between Sept. 13 - Sept. 16, 2010; particularly considering the fact that the Srinagar International Airport would be fully ready for regular air operations with effect from September 17, 2010.
