Calls for developing new colonies and taking up commercially feasible projects | Dy. CM reviews performance of HB | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 16: Underscoring the need to enhance income generation capabilities of J&K Housing Board, Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand, said that the board should explore options to develop new colonies and take up commercially viable projects so as to provide better housing facilities to the people and to improve its financial health. The Deputy Chief Minister said this while chairing a high level meeting to review status of various projects and works being undertaken by the J&K Housing Board, here today. The meeting was attended, among others, by Commissioner/Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department, Mr. Suresh Kumar, Managing Director, The J&K Housing Board, Mr. Dalip Thusoo , Director, Local Bodies, Kashmir, and other senior officers of Housing Board. Stressing on the need to expand land bank of the board, Mr. Tara Chand said that the land bank can be further utilised for developing new colonies, adding that twin cities are already overcrowded and there is a strong need to develop new colonies so as to ease pressure from the urban centres. He further said that where ever the board is having commercial land the same can be auctioned at market price and the revenue be used to acquire new land at peripheral areas where it is available at relatively cheaper prices. Calling for an immediate drive against illegal encroachments, the Deputy Chief Minister said that all open land of housing board should be immediately fenced and authorities with the help of local police should launch a demolition drive to clear the land from any unauthorised construction. He said that the board should also focus on consolidating its land bank and making sure that its resources are not misused. Mr. Tara Chand instructed the housing board to not restrict itself to the twin cities only but should also explore options in other fast developing cities across the state. He said that demand surveys should be done in other cities also and housing projects be taken up where ever there is financial feasibility. The Managing Director informed the meeting that board has developed 14 colonies and work on new projects is underway, like, a flatted colony would be developed in Humhama, Budgam and similarly in Jammu also flats would be constructed at Gandhi Nagar and Channi Himmat, besides this board is also indentifying new places all across the state to develop commercially feasible projects. |
