Curfew continues in Poonch, Mendhar; Rajouri observes bandh

RAJOURI, Sept 16: Even as no relaxation was given in curfew restrictions in Poonch and Mendhar, a complete bandh was today observed in Rajouri town in protest against the yesterday's police firing at Mendhar in which three protesters were killed and several others wounded. Today was the third day of curfew in Poonch and first in Mendhar. In protest against the Mendhar incident, a complete bandh was observed here today. Apart from shops and other business establishments, government offices and educational institutions also remained closed. Vehicular traffic also remained off the roads.
Muslims took out peaceful processions and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere.
The call for Rajouri bandh was given by Muslim Coordination Committee (MCC) headed by Abdul Qayoom Dar after consultation with Beopar Mandal and various organizations of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs. The bandh call was supported by all the communities.
Residents of Kheora, Behrote and Saj also held demonstrations against the Mendher police for allegedly killing innocent civilians.
The protest rally at Behroute was led by Anjum Mirza, who said police must respect human rights while tackling any situation in the area.
He demanded immediate arrest of the police officer involved in firing on civilians.
Protest rallies were also organized at Kheoura and Saj areas of Rajouri. MCC thanked all the communities for making the bandh call a success.
Meanwhile, divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal and IGP Ashok Gupta today visited Mendhar and assured the people that stern action would be taken against the police officers and cops who were found involved in yesterday's firing. Kotwal said while the situation at Mendhar was mishandled by some police officers, people should also avoid violence and adopt peaceful path to register their protest.
He told them that the government was going to take stern action against the cops who had opened fire on protesters. Police had already lodged FIR against SDPO and his four PSOs and he was personally investigating the matter, the divisional commissioner added.
The SDM, Mendhar, was also directed by him to record the statements of witnesses so that the inquiry report was submitted to the government at the earliest.
On the directions of chief minister Omar Abdullah, vice-chairman of J&K State Kissan Board, Rachpal Singh and vice-chairman of J&K State Advisory Board for Pahari Speaking People, Mushtaq Bukhari reached Rajouri today and held meetings with local public. They interacted with the locals and appealed them to maintain communal brotherhood.
