LUTF formally merges in BJP, accuses Cong NC of betrayal | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT LEH, Sept 16: The Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF) and all councilors of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) today formally joined the BJP at a function held here. The function was attended by former BJP national president and MP Raj Nath Singh, BJP national general secretary, JP Nada, state president of the Party, Shamsher Singh Manhas, its Seh Prabhari J&K, RP Singh and National Executive member BJP, Dr Nirmal Singh. Besides all the 17 councilors of LAHDC and members of LUTF the meeting was also attended by LAHDC, chairman, Chering Dhorje and LUTF president and ex-MP, Thumpstong Chawang. LUTF stands for grant of Union Territory status to Ladakh in view of constant discrimination faced by the region for last 63 years in all spheres of life. Addressing the meeting the LUTF leaders said since BJP is the only party in the country which has supported the demand of Ladakhis for grant of UT status to the region so LUTF has decided to merge in the Party for the greater interests of the people of the region. It may be recalled that there was also brewing resentment in Ladakh against the Government for announcing the elections to the LAHDC, Leh at such a time when the people of Leh have not as yet recovered from last moths cloud burst which claimed hundreds of lives besides rendering a large number of people shelter less. Criticizing the decision of the Government some leaders of LUTF have said that instead of working for the reconstruction of Leh and rehabilitation of the victims the Government has thrusted elections on people which was not appropriate at this juncture. The LUTF leaders were hopeful that BJP will support their demand regarding the UT status to Ladakh in parliament for which the Party leadership gave them an assurance during the meeting. The LUTF leaders have accused the Congress and NC of betrayal saying that during the 2008 elections it was decided that all parties will merge in LUTF and contest elections on a joint platform but alter Congress and NC backtracked from their stand. This has been taken seriously by the people of Ladakh. The BJP national president, Raj Nath Singh according to sources has also talked to Chief Minister asking that the amount of exgratia be enhanced as Rs two lakh given to the victims for construction of houses is meager. Moreover Singh has also taken up the exception to holding of elections when the Leh tragedy victims are craving for help and support. He also expressed his displeasure over the slow pace of rehabilitation work and demanded that the same be expedited, the sources added. The sources said that BJP leaders while criticising the Government of holding the elections at this juncture have said that there was a provision in the law of extending the term of LAHDC for one year more but the Government announced the elections for political motivations leaving the people in lurch. |
