Curfew continues in Valle on 5th day running | Weddings, essential commodity supplies, services, healthcare suffer | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 16: With curfew and shutdown continuing without break on the 5th consecutive day in Kashmir valley today, there was no significant clash between protestors and Police but services have begun to suffer badly. Meanwhile, Army claimed to have killed five more militants in a gunbattle in Tral area, raising number of the militants killed in different encounters to 30 in last 16 days of the month. A defence spokesman said that troops engaged a thick group of militants, believed to be cadres of Lashkar-e-Toiba, in an encounter in Tral area of Pulwama district on Wednesday. He said that six militants got killed in the 30-hour-long gunbattle and claimed that there was no collateral damage. According to him, troops recovered a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from the militants killed that included eight AK-56 rifles. The spokesman said that with today's overnight operation, security forces eliminated as many as 30 militants in the last 16 days of the current month in different gunbattles in the Valley hinterland. This number of militants have not died in a single month in the Valley since 2006. On the law and order front, an official spokesman said, minor clashes occurred between thin groups of demonstrators and Police/CRPF at about a dozen places in the Valley. There was, however, no casualty. In one-odd major incident, an unruly crowd targeted a vehicle of CRPF 73 Bn with heavy stone pelting at Nunrishi Colony, Bemina, in periphery of the capital city. The driver lost control and the vehicles turned turtle. An official spokesman said that five CRPF personnel sustained injuries. They were all evacuated and rushed to hospital for treatment. Reports available from eight district headquarters said that in contrast to last many days, there was no major incident of clash or violence anywhere. Late evening reports said that a group of people attacked a CRPF camp at Bomai. Forces retaliated, causing in juries to at least two civilians. Reeling under curfew continuously since Sunday morning, Kashmir valley showed no signs of a thaw in the stand-off with Police and CRPF today. Reports said that Police and CRPF men on duty did not entertain most of the curfew passes issued by respective District Magistrates. According to these reports, professionals from all walks, including mediapersons, doctors and other state employees, were tersely sent back with the warning that Army would "set you right from tomorrow, if anybody dared to venture out". Reports said that supplies of essential commodities as also all kinds of services, excluding Internet, suffered badly in absence of any relaxation in the strictly enforced curfew. Curfew had been imposed by the authorities in the wake of Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's Eid rally turning violent and burning a major office complex in front of J&K High Court on September 11th. Reports said that availability of baby food and medicines suffered badly as nobody was allowed to move or open a shop. According to credible reports, guests and cooks have been failing to reach their destinations and, consequently, wedding ceremonies of the otherwise peak season were being cancelled or postponed in thousands. |
