| CM lays foundation of production unit of Khrew cement | | Azad sets 18 months target for completion of 2nd unit while existing unit took 8 years for completion | | Srinagar, October 27, – Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad has under scored the importance of indigenous production of building construction material to give fillip to the massive construction programme launched in the state to put the economy back on rails and seek all-round prosperity and development of the state. Mr. Azad laid foundation of about Rs. 100 crore 2nd unit of Khrew cement factory here on Friday. The capacity of the unit will be 600 tonnes of high quality cement per day and the unit would be modern one where consumption of power will be comparatively lower than that of the existing unit. The existing unit which has a capacity of producing 400 tonnes of cement per day was started in 1974 and it took 8 years for completion and was commissioned in 1982. However Mr. Azad directed for completion of 2nd unit within18 months fixed target. He directed for launching the construction work round the clock so that the unit is completed within fixed time. Chief Minister said that cement forms an essential ingredient for every kind of construction and availability of quality cement is imperative for durability and success of construction programmes. He said that cement has attained most significant place in the present construction scenario and is most sought commodity throughout the world as its utilization is required for every construction work. Saying that adequate production of cement by the 2nd unit and its availability within the state would not only help to implement the projects well in time but reduce the costs of the schemes considerably. He said the second unit of Khrew Cement factory to be completed at a cost of about Rs. 100 crore would augment the capacity of cement production of the factory by 600 tonnes per day and help to meet ever increasing cement demand indigenously. Chief Minister said that the demand of cement throughout the country has increased manifold and launching of prestigious Bharat Nirmaan Programme added pressure on the cement availability as such efforts should be made to produce more and more cement locally so that works are not hampered on account of cement shortage. Mr. Azad said that establishment of cement factory and other industries would not only pave way for large scale economic development but generate substantial jobs for both skilled and non skilled youth. Stressing the need for exploring various means of employment rather than looking towards only government jobs, Chief Minister said that even our non-skilled labours do not take advantage of jobs provided by such factories and labours from outside the state are to be engaged to carry out day to day non skilled work in factories and industrial units. This, he said, is not a healthy trend and would add to the employment problem especially in the non skilled labour sector. He advised the educated youth and technocrats to go for raising industrial units with assistance and technical know how from the concerned departments especially in the fields of horticulture, agriculture and allied sectors so that a new temperament of job seeking and employment generation is created in the state. Praising the cordial relations between the management and workers of the factory, Chief Minister said that this relationship should be further cemented to seek benefits of both workers as well as the factory.
