Congress support to Omar disappoints dissidents in J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu, September 17 The mood in the camp of the congress dissidents in Jammu and Kashmir is downbeat following the decision of the Congress high command to extend its support to Omar Abdullah. Their mood is downbeat because they had expected Ghulam Nabi Azad to replace Omar or someone from the Muftis to take over as Chief Minister which could allow the dissidents a chance to get suitable rehabilitated. Against this the mood in the camp of the congress loyalists is upbeat because they did not want any change of guard at the present juncture. One report said that the Congress high command had, during the last three days, thought of some suitable alternative the present political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir but two developments seem to have forced the centre to postpone it s exercise on changing the guard in the troubled state. First, the PDP leadership was not ready to step in the shoes of Omar Abdullah and while a section in the PDP was willing to forge an alliance with the Congress but it was in favour Mehbooba to be installed as Chief Minister because Mufti Sayeed was to not prepared to risk his reputation by accepting the post of the Chief Minister at a very difficult time. Secondly, the AICC Gener al Secretary, Rahul Gandhi, had already conveyed his support to Omar to his mother and Manmohan Singh who dared not oppose the future prime Minister. Also Dr Farooq' meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Thursday is said to have clinched the issue in favour of Omar. Dr Farooq is said to have convinced the AICC Chief and the Prime Minister that there was no suitable alternative to Omar and he needed more time to show results. Farooq Abdullah has been insistent in his demand that his son should not be asked to resign. This has given great respite to the rank and file in the National Conference. Even those in the National Conference who are opposed to Omar Abdullah are happy over the central Government's decision because these so called dissidents in the National Conference had harboured fears that they would lose their ground once Omar Abdullah was forced to quit. And that too when Dr Farooq Abdullah had conveyed to the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson that he was not interested in replacing his son as Chief Minister. Reports said that the Congress high command has, while lending full support to Omar, decided to wait for a couple of months and see the results. In case there was no improvement some political alternative had to be explored.
