Jammu Muslims stage protest, cut down by police
9/17/2010 10:12:47 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 17: Scores of Muslims on Friday staged a protest demonstration at various places in Jammu city against desecration of the Quran in USA.
The members of Muslim community assembled at Talab Khatikan, Bagh-e-Bahu, and Peer Mitta Masjids for Friday prayers and after prayers lodged a strong protest demonstration.
During the protest all business establishments of Talab Khatikan remained closed. The protest at Talab Khatikan was led by Ilal Beigh who tried to take out a protest rally which was foiled by Jammu police. The protestors clashed with police when it tried to stop the protestors to move forward and arrested Illal Beigh who was leading the protest.
It is pertinent to mention her that the Muslim community earlier had given a call for Jammu bandh today that gathered weak response in the wake of the developments taking place on the desecration of Quran terming that the information was ill conmc3eived and had no relevance about its desecration or burning.
On the day of the event when information percolated here about the Quran having been desecrated by Terry Jones, the pastor, hundreds of Muslims hailing from different parts of the city had assembled at various places and shouted slogans against the blasphemy committed by setting the holy book on the fire.
The Muslim community had taken strong view of the act and had even warned of retaliating tough if the Christian community headed by the Pastor would not have tendered the apology.
The significant development on the day was that though the Jammu region welcomed the move of the Muslims protesting against the sacrilege of the Holy Book saying that securing the religious rights by any community is acceptable but diverting the issue to satiate any personnel agenda.
However on the day, the community besides protesting against the sacrilege had recourse to sloganeering in favour of Pakistan that had many eyebrows raised here as various social and political organizations did not like.
Today’ bandh call hence had small bearings over the Quran desecration and a small protest if raised from some quarter was snubbed by the police.
