EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 18: Abdullah dynasty cannot survive without power and for achieving power and retaining control over it can go to any extent. It can stoop low. It can kill its conscious. It can become an object of contempt and ridicule. It threatens but eats its words in no time. It can shamelessly take a complete U-turn. And it has been happening since long.
In fact, it all started with Sheikh Abdullah, father and founder of the rabidly communal and rabidly anti-Jammu outfit, National Conference. He wanted independence from India and his argument was the same Mohammad Ali Jinnah had advanced while seeking partition of India on communal lines. Jinnah's argument was that Hindus and Muslims were two distinct nations and they could not co-exist because they also belong to two different cultures and civilizations. He stood for two-nation theory. Sheikh Abdullah stood for three-nation theory - Hindu, Muslim and Kashmiri Muslim (read Kashmiri Sunni Muslim).
When failed, he turned to Jinnah and Liaquat Ali and offered accession of Kashmir to Pakistan. His condition was that Kashmir should be given a special status/autonomous status. Jinnah and Ali who hated Sheikh Abdullah the most rejected out-of-hand his proposal. Both had dismissed the Sheikh with contempt and asserted that he could barter the Kashmiri Muslims anytime for the "sake of personal power and profit." The Sheikh wanted power because he had been struggling for it since 1931 and, hence, he took a complete U-turned and turned to Nehru who obliged him by handing over the state power to him without realizing that his elevation to the office of Wazir-e-Azam would jeopardize the country's paramount interests. And it really happened. The nation is reaping what the Indian political establishment sowed in 1947.
Convinced that the Sheikh's continuation as Wazir-e-Azam would upset everything, Nehru had him dismissed and arrested. The Sheikh remained behind the bars for years. Power-hungry and unscrupulous as he was, he struck a deal with Indira Gandhi in 1975 abandoning his plebiscite doctrine and again came back to power. He wanted greater autonomy from New Delhi, but failed. He should have immediately resigned, but he didn't. His lust for power and pelf didn't allow him to relinquish the office. As if all this was not enough to prove that he was power-hungry and that he could go to any extent to fulfill his insatiable lust for power, he, instead of asking New Delhi to withdraw from the state Central laws, allowed it to extend more Central laws, thus exposing his politics of duplicity. He consistently aroused passions in Kashmir and survived and thrived on the blood and sweat of the gullible Kashmiri Muslims. He wanted power and he died while in power.
Farooq Abdullah carried forward the legacy of his father and for achieving the same goal at whatever cost, even at the cost of his prestige. He had once threatened that he would teach the Congress party a lesson because the party of Nehru had ill-treated the Sheikh, but took no time in taking a complete U-turn. He entered into an accord with Rajiv Gandhi in 1986, notwithstanding the fact that Indira Gandhi had got his government dismissed on the ground that it had become a "threat to national security."
Farooq wanted power and he got it using all means fair and foul. The assembly elections were rigged on an unprecedented scale to manipulate the 1987 election result. The Muslim United Front was forced to bite dust and the result is what we have been witnessing today, with the likes of Salahuddin dictating terms from across the border. Salahuddin was one of the MUF candidates. He would have won the election hands down, but his defeat was ensured, with New Delhi giving unstinted support to the anti-people and anti-democratic drama being enacted in Kashmir. Everything happened under the nose of Farooq Abdullah. He wanted power and he got it but only after queering the Indian pitch in Kashmir.
Not just this, Farooq Abdullah, like his father, allowed the Union Government to extend to the state more and more Central laws. It would not be out of place to mention here that Farooq Abdullah, who otherwise talks about greater autonomy, was the first Chief Minister who adopted POTA and implemented it ruthlessly. He wanted to remain in power despite the fact that his popularity graph had come down to almost zero level and he used POTA to the hilt to rein in his opponents or adversaries.
The Abdullah dynasty dumbfounded the Kashmiri Muslim in 1998, when it severed relations with the out-of-power Congress and joined the BJP-led NDA government. This action of Farooq Abdullah surprised every one because the relations between the National Conference and the BJP had never been cordial. In fact, the BJP and the National Conference were bitterly opposed to each other on ideological grounds. Farooq Abdullah defended his decision saying the progress and development in Jammu and Kashmir depended on friendly relations between the state and the Centre. He now wanted power for his raw son. He wanted the BJP-led government to include Omar Abdullah in the Union Council of Ministers and he achieved his goal. (To be continued)
