Amitabh Mattoo's Pakistani bandwagon | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 18: Amitabh Mattoo, who had acknowledged in Geneva that he didn't represent the displaced Kashmiri Hindus, says "It must be recognized that today almost the entire Valley has been overwhelmed by a collective expression of rage, led by the youth who were born or grew up during the years of militancy and who are driven by a sense of hopelessness." Who has been responsible for the rise of militancy in Kashmir? Mattoo knows it, but he would not say it publicly because such an acknowledgement would harm his personnel interests. He knows that what has been happening in Kashmir, particularly since 1987 is the immediate fall-out of the communal politics and politics of separatism being indulged in Kashmiri leaders of all hues, but he would not blame them. Instead, he would hail them as secularist of secularists. He would join them and describe them as victims of the Indian brutality. He would hide the fact that the Kashmiri Muslims are the most prosperous community of the country. Instead, he would coin terminologies that would convey an impression that the Kashmiri Muslims are the most neglected and persecuted lot. He would not even blame the fanatics in Kashmir for the exodus of the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Hindus from their land of Vitasta. Instead, he would form an unholy alliance with rabidly communal elements and despise India. Mattoo would not stop here. He would go several steps further and say: "This (unrest) is a product of our own follies, and our inability to translate the gains of the elections in 2008, the most inclusive in J&K's history, into long-term dividends, and these mistakes have been compounded over the past few months." Mattoo would shamelessly attack New Delhi, but would not explain as to which follies we (New Delhi) have committed. He would, like the Muftis and the Abdullahs, want New Delhi to believe that elections or constitution of popularly-elected government in Jammu and Kashmir and the so-called Kashmir problem are two different things. He would want New Delhi to believe that the free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir mean only an exercise undertaken to meet the day-to-day administrative and civic needs of the people; it should not be taken to mean the Kashmiri Muslim's trust in the Indian political system. In fact, he, like the Geelanis, the Muftis, the Abdullahs and the Mirwaizs, would want New Delhi to acknowledge that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory, whose political has yet to be decided. In fact, he would want New Delhi to announce major, major political concessions leading up to the virtual secession of Jammu and Kashmir from the national mainstream. Not content with all this, the perverted Mattoo would go further and say: "We accept that J&K is unique and must be dealt with specially. Its uniqueness is obvious for a variety of historical reasons…A Muslim majority state that voluntarily acceded to India in 1947 lent tremendous strength to the construction of India as a vibrant, secular and pluralistic state." What is unique about Kashmir? Kashmiri is like any other part of India. Yes, it is unique in one sense. It houses intolerant, regressive and communal elements, who have driven out the Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley, who have rid Kashmir of almost all the non-Muslims; who are now seeking to oust the miniscule minority of Sikhs from Kashmir; who have all along exploited the people of Jammu and Ladakh; who had all along preached violence against the Indian State; who have all along looted and fleeced India or misappropriated the taxes paid by the poor Indian tax-payers; and who fleece India and curse and bleed it with a thousand-cut almost everyday. This is the uniqueness of Kashmir: Kashmir that was hundred per cent Hindu some six centuries ago has today become almost hundred percent Muslim. This is the uniqueness of Kashmir: Kashmir hates Indian democracy and secularism and wants to convert itself into a worst form of theocracy. Geelani and Andrabi call it "Nizam-e-Mustafa." Mattoo also wants New Delhi to accord a "special" treatment to Kashmir. What more he wants for the already extraordinarily empowered Kashmir? Doesn't he know that Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in the country that has its own flag and own constitution? He knows it. Doesn't he know that Jammu and Kashmir is the only state in the country that enjoys residuary powers, including the power of taxation? He knows it. Doesn't he know that no Central law can be extended to the state against the will of the Jammu and Kashmir State? He knows it. Doesn't he know that Kashmir already enjoys a very special status within the Indian Union under the anti-people and anti-democratic Article 370? He knows it. But he doesn't feel satisfied. Actually, he wants Jammu and Kashmir to get out of India or establish a Kashmiri Muslim Republic within the secular and democratic Indian Republic. He also wants New Delhi to have a separate Kashmir Ministry because he considers Jammu and Kashmir an alien state. Besides, he wants New Delhi to start dialogue with Kashmiri fanatics without any pre-conditions. This is Amitabh Mattoo. He is not a conflict-manager. He is a mercenary who sells his conscious for personal benefits. It is disgusting to note that such prestigious journals like The Hindustan Times, which played a unique role during the freedom struggle days, are allowing the likes Mattoo to use their invaluable space for preaching communalism and secession. It is time for the management of The Hindustan Times and similar other papers to discard the likes of Mattoos and find other writers who are objective, dispassionate, democrat, secular and pro-India. The other alternative is that the management of these papers should also publish the counterpoints. (Concluded) |
