PDP makes 'ostensible' presence …….for ' latent dividends'? | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 18: The main opposition party of the state PDP which had chosen to remain off the track of joint political activities aimed at bringing in some peace, finally managed to be in focus, thanks to the All Party meet, this time convened by no less a dignitary than the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. From near obscurity in these 'shows' to ostensible presence in the meet two days , what prompted the Muftis to make sudden political manifestation. In the backdrop of the timing and uncertain political atmosphere, PDP ' move' is being seen as more than what the leadership is contending. The PDP had abstained from the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on July 12 describing the exercise as futile and claiming that the state government had nothing new to offer as it had exhausted all its options. The largest opposition party in the state also did not attend the meeting of a delegation of the state level parties, comprising many veterans who met the Prime Minister a month later at New Delhi. The sudden change of heart and mind in terms of accepting the invitation this time may well be justified by the party president by saying that nothing has come out of the previous meetings at the state level. It was a meeting convened by PM which is what PDP wanted and therefore lost no time in accepting the offer. True, in so far as their stand taken earlier, even though for 'public consumption' is concerned. But political analysts and observers are looking at it beyond this theory by the high command. PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti who had been out rightly rejecting even New Delhi proposed moves only recently, this time justified her participation also by saying that "Kashmir cannot be left to burn and suffer like that…….a beginning has to be made to restore normalcy and more importantly to address the core issue….". However, PDP's sudden plunge into Centre's efforts at this critical juncture has raised many eyebrows not only within ruling National Conference but also entire political spectrum which is viewing it as party's 'political maneuvering' to accommodate itself in the present picture. One that PDP's decision came at a time when the talk of possible change of guard was not only ripe but it looked imminent at one point of time in the chaotic signals emanating from all sides. This fact cannot be overlooked that former Chief Minister and PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Syed had already arrived in New Delhi ahead of All Party Meeting and was reportedly in constant contact with PMO and other matter in Dilli Durbar. It is a different matter to what extent PDP has been able to make its 'dent' in the 'uncertain' Dilli Durbar vis-a- vis the possibility of Omar stepping down or a political realignment in the coalition that became loud two days back with usage of terms like 'governance deficit'. PDP patron Mufti Syed's influence and backchannel approach in New Delhi is too known to be undermined in the picture at present. Though Centre did not show any urgency in asking Omar to step down nor does the latter appear to be in a mood to do so, PDP's 'mellowed down' approach contrary to the tantrums leadership had bee throwing in recent past is being seen as a move to freshen up its relations rather status with the Centre, more importantly Congress, a party with which it enjoyed power in 2002. Observers are also looking at the PDP participation as a strategic move, if not a complete act of desperation to come to lime light and be in focus of mainstream 'political ventures' which the party leadership had opted out . However, since this approach fetched no benefits and attention politically in the burning scenario of Kashmir, a leadership which is replete with political acumen decided not to make mistake in missing this opportunity which looked 'loaded' and 'weighty' in many ways. In other words, it did not want to remain in isolation and 'out of the sight' of those who matter. But will this act bring any immediate political dividends to the largest opposition in reckoning……remains to be seen ! |
