Gujjars seek establishment of Gojri centre | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 19: Seeking establishment of “Gojri Research Centre” in University of Jammu, Gujjars of Jammu and Kashmir today appealed University authorities to implement the decision which has been duly approved by the council. In a handout issued here today, it has been stated that the decision was approved in the council meeting held in presence of Chancellor of Jammu University and pro-chancellor in 2008. It further said that the council had approved full-fledge research centre for development of Gojri Language. Community has also demanded similar centre for Kashmir University. Raising the issue with Governor N.N.Vohra, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation in a statement issued here said that university authorities are deliberately delaying establishment of centre without any reason. Secretary of Tribal Foundation Dr. Javed Rahi said that even the teaching staff was also sanctioned by council for Gojri centre. Rahi demanded that the centre should be started at Jammu. He said that "Gojri" speakers who constitute 20 to 25 percent the population of state are fighting since 1980 for establishment of “Gojri department” on the patron of ‘Dogri’ and ‘Kashmiri’ departments. Dr.Rahi said that state government has already recognized Gojri by including it in the 6th Schedule of state constitution but till date no University in the state has recognized this language by including it into the University Curriculum. He said that they have urged authorities for promoting studies and research in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, custom, and only this research centre can fulfill all these growing demands. He urged community leaders to pressurize university authorities including state governor, Chief Minister and Vice Chancellor over the issue of establishment of Gojri Research Centre in Jammu
