| Our country is faced with a number of problems at this juncture. Inflation is on the rise, poverty has not been controlled, many people die because of hunger and there are others who suffer from malnutrition. Naxal problem has gained momentum in many states and there seems to be complete lawlessness in some tribal areas. Corruption is eating the vitals of society and there is no serious attempt from government to end this evil. Amid this mess we are going to host Common Wealth Games in the month of October. There are calls from the organizers of these games to make them a success and then the painful reports in media that much funds have been embezzled by the organizers of these games. At this time we need to have a look at the conditions the "Aam Aadmi" is faced with and then introspect, does India deserve the hosting of common wealth games? After independence, Indian government has initiated several programmes to alleviate poverty, including subsidizing food and other necessities, increased access to loans, improving agricultural techniques and price supporting, and promoting education and family planning but still the alleviation of poverty seems to be a distant dream. Over the last two decades Indian economy has grown steadily, its growth has been uneven when compared to different social groups, economic groups, geographic groups, regions and urban and rural areas. Between 1999 and 2008, the annualized growth rates of Gujrat (8.8%), Haryana (8.7%), Delhi (7.4%) where much higher than for Bihar (5.1%) Uttar Pradesh (4.4%) Madhya Pradesh (3.5%). Poverty rates in rural Orissa 43% and rural Bihar 41% are among the worlds most extreme. A study by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative using a multidimensional poverty index ( MPI) found that there were 421 million poor living under MPI in Bihar, Chattisgarh , Jaharkhand, Madhaya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajisthan, Utter Pradesh and West Bangal. This number is higher than 410 million of poor living in the 26 poorest African Nations. According to a New York Times Report about 42.5 % of children in India suffer from malnutrition. The world Bank citing estimates of world health organization stated that "about 49% of under weight children 34% of worlds stunned children and 46% of worlds wasted children live in India" India is transforming rapidly into primarily urban, Industrial society with industry as its main source of income.
The farmers under these conditions are caught in a dilemma and in the absence of any responsible help from Govt. or society, did not know how to survive in changing economy. Indiscriminate raining pattern in our country adds to farmers problems. Moreover a farmer never earns his due share of profit for his produce. In this bizzare scenario many farmers are commuting suicides. National crime records Bureau stated that there were atleast 16,196 farmer's suicides in our country in 2008. The constitution charges every state with the responsibility of "raising the level of nutrition, and standard of living of its people and the improvement of public health as among its main duties." however the government sector is under staffed and under financed. Poor services at state run hospitals force many people to visit private medical practitioners. The vast majority of the country suffers from a poor standard of health care infrastructure. The Delhi Common Wealth Games may run an expenditure of $12 Billion. The games are being seen as New Delhi's chance to show case itself as a global city to the 10 thousand visitors the city expects to host.
But this is not an ideal way of showing our countries strength. Unless we start doing for the rural Indian's we can not think of becoming a super power. As far as the Common Wealth Games, the funds could have been used better to built schools, Hospitals, Roads, improve health facilities and agricultural sector., just as the Chicagoans feel that the failure of Olympics bid was good for Chicago.
