Who will meet the visiting delegation?
9/20/2010 5:55:48 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 19: With the authorities determined to keep the people indoors during All Party Delegation's stay in Srinagar, the chances of ordinary citizens of meeting the Parliamentarians seem quite bleak.
After yesterday's four-hour relaxation in various parts of the summer capital, the authorities chose to enforce strict curfew today. Taking strong note of curfew restrictions, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mahbooba Mufti said it reflects Omar's frustration. "If curfew is not relaxed, I will reconsider my decision of meeting the delegation", she threatened.
While the people stayed indoors, the authorities gave Airport Road a facelift. Scores of workers were entrusted the job of erasing the "Go India Go Back" slogans written on the road itself and the walls.
A formal letter has been sent to the Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq. Geelani has shown no interest. Mirwaiz said he will convene a meeting and take a decision accordingly. People close to Mirwaiz said he will not meet the delegation.
The government seems desperate to make the visit a success. Most of the people believe the government will get houseboat owners, taxi drivers and activists of National Conference and Congress to make the show a big success. However, to confer some respectability to the visit, a senior Congress leader called several civil society activists yesterday urging them not to boycott the delegation. "They are here and it is an opportunity for you to put forth your demands", he said.
The leader's plea, however, went in vain. "What do we meet the delegation for? Isn't the Home Minister aware of the situation?"
Similar attempt was made by the PDP spokesman. He also phoned a number of people but all in vain.
The procedure for meeting the legislators is cumbersome. The interested people have to call the district magistrate who will send a vehicle to pick up the person from his locality.
With the separatists having urged the people to boycott the delegation, nobody would dare to meet the visiting legislators and that too in a manner prescribed by the local administration.
A university teacher while welcoming the delegation said the local administration must relax curfew for the next two days to enable the delegation to meet the commoner on the streets. "Sponsored people will mislead the delegation", he said.
