Pak mortars fall, explode in Mankote village; no harm done | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 19: Mortars, fired by Pakistan Saturday night in clear violation of the border ceasefire, fell and exploded in the vicinity of Mankote village in KG sector of Poonch, spreading panic. Official sources said violating ceasefire, Pak army resorted to heavy shelling and small arms fire, targetting forward Indian army posts of Kranti, Kirpan and 31 at about 9.45 pm. India retaliated. The enemy fire was aimed at facilitating infiltration by militants from across the Line of Control (LoC), the sources added. Sources said there was heavy exchange of fire between the two sides from 9.45 pm to 10.30 pm. During this time, some Pak mortars fell in close vicinity of Mankote village, but these exploded without causing any harm to life and property of the people. Sources said the mortars fired from across the LoC had landed in any Indian village after a long time. Loss, if any, on the Pak side in retaliatory action by India was not immediately known, the sources added. The intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides continued till 3 am today. Sources said vigil was further stepped along the LoC after the unprovoked Pak firing. Troops were on high alert to foil any infiltration bid by militants, the sources added. |
