Poor start by host J&K boys on opening day | National School Games in football begins | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 20: Host Jammu and Kashmir made a poor beginning when the boys lost to Haryana by three goals to nil in the inaugural match of the National School Games in under-19 football at MA Stadium, here today. Haryana boys dominated the game right from the beginning playing a quality soccer. The visitors scored the opening goal in the 15th minute through Yogesh (junior). Ten minutes later, Yogesh (senior) struck the goal netting the ball in the 25th minute. Maninder scored the third goal for his team in the 33rd minute to give his side an unbeatable lead. However, host J&K boys tried their level best to reduce the margin but all their attempts proved to be futile exercise. In other matches of the day, Gujarat, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttrakhand and Orissa emerged the winners. Other results: Gujarat bt Vidya Bharti 8-0; Chandigarh bt Delhi 6-0; Punjab bt Maharashtra 2-0; Uttrakhand bt Karnataka 3-2; Orissa bt Rajasthan 5-1. Earlier, Minister for Sports and Technical Education, R S Chib declared open the Games in a well attended function held at MA Stadium, here this morning. Member Legislative Assembly (MLA), Ashok Khajuria was guest of honour. While welcoming the participating teams, senior citizens and the members of sports community, the Minister said, "Such mega events provide ample opportunity to the budding players for expediting their talent up to the optimum level," adding that the State Government would provide all kinds of facilities to the participating contingents. He apprised that about 30 states are participating in this sporting extravaganza which itself is a record as for as participation of state teams in national level events was concerned. The Sports Minister expressed that competitions like this provide opportunity for budding youth in cultural exchange with the other states, as the boys from J&K share it with the boys from Goa and the boys from Goa with Madhya Pradesh and so on. Prominent among others present on the occasion were Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Manoj Diwedi, Director General DYSS, S A Laharwal, former IGP, SS Bijral, Wing Commander MM Joshi, former Minister, Manjit Singh.
