5 hurt in police firing as people defy curfew in Sopore
9/20/2010 11:29:54 PM
Early times report
SRINAGAR, Sept 20: At least five persons, including a minor, were injured in alleged firing by police in Sopore even as situation in the valley remained by and large peaceful with curfew remaining in force for the ninth day today in all major towns of Kashmir.
Police allegedly resorted to firing when a group of youth defied curfew and indulged in stone-pelting at Natipora in Sopore this afternoon, official sources said.
Two of the injured, identified as Rameez Ahmad Bhat (22) and Junaid Ahmad (13) were brought to SMHS hospital here with bullet wounds in their back.
They were being operated upon by doctors and their condition was stated to be critical.
Sources said locals of Natipora staged a violent protest against the killing of 25-year-old Mubeena, who was hit by a stray bullet inside her house last evening while police were chasing a crowd.
Barring the Sopore incident, the valley remained peaceful by and large with minor protests reported from Khannabal and Sagam in Anantnag and Muran in Pulwama districts of south Kashmir, the sources added.
As the hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference, headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, had asked people to stage a march to the local office of United Nations Military Observers Group (UNMOG) at Dalgate in Srinagar today, security forces strictly implemented the curfew to thwart any attempt by separatists to go ahead with their plan.
Geelani's Hurriyat faction is spearheading the ongoing unrest in the valley which started with the killing of a teenager on June 11 allegedly by police in downtown city and has so far left 103 people dead in the alleged firing by police and security forces on protesters.
Curfew was imposed in Srinagar on September 12 and extended to the entire valley next day following widespread violence.
The relaxation in curfew restrictions notwithstanding, authorities are enforcing the strict implementation of curfew in view of the tense situation.
The curfew coincides with the two-day visit of the all-party delegation led by home minister P Chidambaram to the state.
The curfew passes were not honoured by security personnel deployed on the Srinagar airport road this morning, but the restrictions were later eased.
Besides Srinagar city, there were also strict curfew restrictions in Budgam town along with Warpora, Mirgund, Nadirgund, Choon Humhama, Wattdara, Gagoo Ompora, Narkara, Shiekhpora, Galwanpora, Chadoora, Panzan, Nagam, Machawa, Kralpora, Wathora, Dawlatpora, Hassipora, Alamdar Colony, Charar-i-Shrief, Ganderbal town, Kangan in Anantnag, Mattan and several other places.
