Despite Kashmir turmoil Congress in J&K remains divided | | | Early Times Report Jammu,Sept 20:Even in the wake of high level of trumoil and civilian strife in the Kashmir valley during the last over three months, leading to the death of over 103 people in the firing opened by the security forces, the state unit of the Congress continues to be a divided house.A stage has reached when the so called dissidents have started blaming the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz,for remaining absent from the valley for all these months. Interestingly, these dissidents have conveyd to the AICC Chief,Sonia Gandhi, that Soz be asked to explain what where the reasons that fored him to be away from the scene of turmoil in Kashmir.Ostensibly it was a trick played by the dissidents to force the Congress high command to axe Soz and replace him by some senior party leader from the dissident camp as PCC Chief. However, the loyalists have reacted sharply against the allegations levelled by the dissidents saying that for most of the time during the last three months Soz had spent more time in Kashmir and Jammu than in Delhi. The loyalists said that whenever Soz visited Delhi it was done in response to the summons from the party bosses and at times it was done to discuss the state issues with the party high command. And invariably Soz spent one to three days in the union capital. One congress minister said that he had been accompanying Soz to various areas in the state where he addressed public meetings. He said as far as the ruling coalition is concerned Soz outclassed those in the National Conference as far as the number of piublic meetings, including the one's held in Srinagar,Anantnag,Jammu,Poonch,Rajouri and other places was concerned. The Minister said that even when compared to the Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, bigger number of people, belonging to different walks of life, met Soz during the last three months. He said that the dissidents were trying to malign Soz and his supporters. He cautioned the Congress high command against the machinations of the dissidents so that the Congress remained united which was needed at the current critical juncture. Party sources said that the Congress high command had been fully aware of the tussle between the dissidents and the loyalists and it was out of this realisation that the party leadership had refused to accept PDP Chief,Ms Mehbooba Mufti's,suggestion that she would lend support to the Congress led Government from outside.Mehbooba had, during her discussion with Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh,in New Delhi some five days ago, dished out two solutions to the current crisis in Kashmir. She had suggested to the Congrss high command to placed the state of Jammu and Kashmir under a brief spell of the Governor's rule. She had tried to convince the Congress high command that the situation will witness a dramatic improvement if Omar was told to quit and Governor's rule was imposed. She had informed the central ladership that once the Governor's rule was imposed she could discuss with it what next ? Another suggestion she gave to the Congress high command was to install a Congress Government which will receive support of the PDP from outside.Reports said the centre rejected both the ideas after Mehbooba refused to takeover as Chief Minister with the support of the Congress, the experiment that had been conducted successfully between 2002 and 2005. Reports said even after the centre rejected both the ideas Mehbooba had assured the Congress high command of her party's support for any plan on r esolving the current turmoil. However, the scales tilted after the AICC General Secretary,Rahul Gandhi, lent his support to Omar Abdullah when he said "Omar was doing a tough job and needed to be given more time."This statement is said to have dismayed the PDP leadership. The PDP continues to believe that once Omar was shown the door the situation in Kashmir will improve.Thre are not many takers to this idea on the plea that the turmoil is the result of craving for azadi
