Skin deptt of SMGS hospital wailing over govt neglect | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 20: Space constraints, shortage of staff and non-availability of latest techniques for skin treatment has almost crippled the functioning of Skin department of Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital at Shalamar. Government has been vehemently claiming of upgrading the hospital on the pattern of All India of Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) but the skin department of SMGS is wailing over the indifferent attitude of the state government towards improving the infrastructural facilities in this department and addressing the issue of shortage of staff. Official sources said that Out Patients Department (OPD) of skin department receives around two hundred fifty patients per day and in summer season, the number of the patients rises to three hundred. They add that due to paucity of space, doctors find it difficult to attend to patients properly while the patients struggle for space for standing properly. Furthermore, situation becomes worst in summers when patients have to wait for hours making life difficult for them as well as their attendants. They have to wait in long queues since there are inadequate sitting facilities. Moreover, there is no drinking water facility nearby. Faced with paucity of space and lack of drinking facility, situation at times gets hostile inside the OPD, assert officials. Officials said that another major problem which skin department is facing is dearth of Para-medical staff. “Non availability of nurses, nursing orderly (NO) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) is creating problems for the skin patients. At least three nurses are required in skin theatre but presently only one nurse is deployed to work,” added the officials. Referring to inadequate nursing staff, they said that only two nurses look after the patients in both morning as well as evening shift. Another deficiency which the department is facing is that of the latest laser technology for treating various skin problems like acne, wrinkles, excessive hairs on body, childhood birthmarks, age spots, scars and freckles. The technology which is being used widely across the country is yet to be introduced in SMGS hospital. Sources maintain that casual approach of the administration towards the skin department which in comparison to other departments caters to maximum number of patients on a routine basis has increased the problems of both the doctors and the patients of this department. Ironically, it is the only department which is facing power shortage since the emergency lights and fans are missing. A patient Ram Kumar Sharma of Kishtwar said that for seventy year old man, it is extremely difficult to wait in a long queue. “There is no sitting arrangement and in summers, it becomes extremely intolerable to wait outside,” said Sudha Magotra. She added that increasing temperature makes waiting for hours outside the Skin OPD appalling. Leave sitting arrangements, there is no drinking water facility, said another Patient.
