Day curfew lifted in Poonch, relaxed in Mendhar
9/20/2010 11:47:16 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
RAJOURI, Sept 20: While the day curfew was lifted in Poonch, three-hour relaxation was given at Mendher which witnessed violence six days ago after the killing of three protesters in police firing in the town.
Few hours of relaxation was given in curfew restrictions in Poonch town Sunday, but when the period passed off peacefully with no untoward incident taking place anywhere, the district administration decided to lift the day curfew today.
The orders to lift the day curfew were issued by the Poonch district magistrate K R Khajuria, official sources said. "We lifted the day curfew in the town today," Khajuria said and added the night curfew would, however, remain till the return of
complete normalcy in the district.
He said the law and order situation was peaceful and adequate security arrangements had been made in sensitive areas.
Meanwhile, curfew was relaxed for 3 hours in Mendher town from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. During this time, the residents were seen busy buying daily use items.
The curfew was reimposed at 7.30. Official sources said if the situation remained normal, daily curfew would be lifted from the Mendhar town Tuesday.
Curfew was imposed in Mendhar town six days back after police had opened fire on a mob which was heading towards a christian missionary school to allegedly set it ablaze, resulting in the death of three protesters and injuries to several others.
The violent mob had also set ablaze almost all the government buildings and nearly seven vehicles. Curfew was imposed in Poonch last week after violent anti-US and pro-Quran protests by Muslims.
