NC leaders intrigued over Cong trying to dissociate from Govt steps
9/21/2010 10:12:46 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Sept 21: Apart from dissensions within the state unit of the Congress, the party leadership is trying to keep itself aloof from the controversy that has developed over the alleged mishandling of the situation in the Kashmir valley. Party sources said that the dissidents in the Congress have stepped up their campaign against the PCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz who has been blamed for having remained absent from the valley during these weeks of turmoil.
Having felt encouraged by the further deterioration in the security scenario in the valley, the dissidents have openly urged the AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi, to replace Soz by some other Congress leader as the PCC Chief. But pro-Soz forces have renewed their camapign against the dissidents.
A number of Congress ministers said that they have been present during the series of public meetings Soz had held in various parts of the state, including those in some belts in the valley, including Anantnag. These ministers have conveyed to Prithvi Raj Chavan that they had accompanied Soz to number of public rallies held in Poonch and Rajouri besides Jammu. Chavan has been informed that instead of joining these programmes, the dissidents remained absent from the scene of activities and simply spent time in maligning the name of Soz and his associates.
What seems to surprise the National Conference leadership is the way a section of the Congress had criticised the state Government for having not lifted curfew restrictions in the valley, especially in Srinagar on Monday when the leaders of All Party delegation reached Srinagar. The NC leadership has made it clear that since Congress shared power with the National Conference it was the duty of the Congress to make its stand on certain issues known to its partner.
A number of senior National Conference leaders said that imposition of curfew restrictions in Kashmir had become necessary after reports had reached the Government that separatists had plans of inciting people to stage massive demonstrations at various places including Srinagar. They said had the people been allowed to stage violent demonstrations it would not have been possible for the team leaders from Delhi to visit the houses of Geelani, Umar Farooq and Mohd.Yasin Malik. Nor would it have been possible for political leaders, those belonging to trade and commerce and other common citizens to travel to the SKICC to meet the delegation leaders.
The NC leaders referred to Sopore events where people defied curfew restrictions and more than three people were injured in police action. One NC leader said that in the interest of coalition dharma, it was necessary for the Congress to be part of the Government measures that were being taken to ensure incident free days.
