2 days National Seminar on “Conflict in J&K: Its Impact on Society, Polity and Economy’’ begins | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 21: Two day National Seminar on “Conflict in Jammu and Kashmir: Its Impact on Society, Polity and Economy’’ being organised by Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu, and Centre for Security Analysis (CSA) Chennai was inaugurated today at University of Jammu.
Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof Varun Sahni gave the inaugural address, while President, CSA, Chennai Lt Gen (Retd) V R Raghavan presented the opening remarks. Director, DSRS Dr Mohammad Munir Alam delivered the welcome address.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Varun Sahni said that it was a very crucial time in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, when this seminar was taking place. Expert scholars from all walks of life were likely to present their views on the vexed problem. Also All Party Delegation is in state to talk to different shades of opinion for paving the way for amicable solution accepted to all concerned.
Prof Sahni was of the view that Kashmir issue would remain to be complex unless Pakistan accepts the legality of the state’s accession to India. He said that it was not a dispute of territory; it was dispute of identity and needs. The needs of the people of the state are to be solved by good governance, added Prof Sahni. He also talked of psychological impact of conflict on the masses, particularly youth.
For the solution of Kashmir problem, Prof Sahni that Ireland issue should be studied for working on any solution. The Ireland issue was also very complex but ultimately it was solved. People with diverse perspectives needed to be heard for balance in any type of solution.
He also said that the state of Jammu and Kashmir is having an important Geo-Political position and is of strategic importance.
Delivering the opening remarks, Lt Gen (Retd) V R Raghavan threw light on formation and working of Centre for Security Analysis (CSA) Chennai.
While speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen (Retd) Raghvan talked of causes of the conflicts and its consequences in the conflict zones of the world. He cited examples of Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, which remained conflict zones at the one time or the other.
He talked on future of the young generations in the conflict zones, he cited example of Kashmiri youth, which grow amid conflict in past 20 years. In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, relation between minorities is also needed to be studied and discussed.
Rajesh Dhar presented the vote of thanks in the inaugural function.
It is pertinent to mention here that the two days National Seminar is comprised into five sessions: Conflict Overview and Its Impact on Polity; Inter-Provincial and Inter-Religious Relations; Impact on Governance and Economy; External Dimensions of the Conflict, and Effects on Specific Segments of Society.
The participants including university professors, security experts, members of civil society, journalists, economists and representatives of industry and commerce will discuss and deliberate upon the ongoing conflict in the state of J&K and its impact in the domains of security, society, polity and economy.
