J&K govt shelves Rs.230 cr alternate high | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 21: Much hyped Rs. 230 crore alternate high density corridor from South Jammu is yet to see light of the day and if the official sources are to be believed, the project has been shelved. Sources said that the project was meant for easing traffic congestion in the winter capital and was being constructed by Road and Buildings department. The Rs. 230 crore prestigious project which was proposed to connect South Jammu directly with National Highway has been kept in limbo and if the PWD sources are to be believed, it is the allotment of funds which has resulted in the department being unable to take up the project. They further said that state government repeatedly knocked at the doors of union ministry for road transport and highways but could not get the project approved on time. Sources even said that it was disinterest shown by former Minister for Roads and Buildings Ghulam Mohammed Saroori for political reasons which resulted in centre deferring approval of the project. They added that the project is pending with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways due to state government's inability to take up the matter with the ministry, it is lying unaddressed. Sources went to extent of saying that the project was shelved only on account of political differences of former R&B minister with MLAs and MPs in whose constituencies this corridor, if constructed would have fallen. Sources said that southern Jammu corridor was supposed to pass through Bishnah, R.S. Pura and Miran Sahib and culminate at Nagrota. Sources disclosed that 50 kilometer long road to ease traffic burden of west Jammu roads particularly on the Akhnoor, Chamb and Poonch routes. They said that it was also aimed at beautifying the entire area through which this corridor was likely to pass. However, irony of the fate is that the project whose even foundation stone has gone missing was scheduled for completion in 2007. Sources further said that proposal for financial assistance for the project was sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval. They stressed that ministry after considering the proposal had asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to submit another draft of the same proposal for consideration and later, for being approved for funding. Sources averred that another project for the construction of fly-over connecting Trikuta Nagar with Channi costing Rs. 70 lakh has also been shelved. They added that even this project has been shelved merely for want of funds. Sources confirmed that once the funds are available, projects would be taken up for execution. "We are not saying that the projects have been shelved. These projects are pending for execution merely on account of paucity of funds," said an official of Roads and Buildings Department. He added that projects whose DPRs have already been approved for funding cannot be shelved for any reason other then the fact that their existence is against the interests of the commoners living in that area. |
