Mufti, Omar set the stage for Separatists-delegation members meeting | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 21: Who is correct? Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, or the leftist leader, Sitaram Yechury or the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj. Omar Abdullah has said that meeting of some members of the All Party delegation with the Kashmiri separatists was part of the plan of the entire exercise of renewing links with those sitting on the other side of the fence. Sitaram Yechury said that "we met the separatists on behalf of the delegation." However, Sushma Swaraj said that there was no mandate for a meeting between the members of the delegation and the separatists. She said those who met Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Molvi Umar Farooq and Mohd. Yasin Mailk had done so in their individual capacity. She explained that there was neither any bar nor any restriction imposed on any member on his her intention of meeting any individual leaders including the separatists. As the three top leaders had a different perception of the meeting that some members of the delegation had with the separatists political commentators were quick to smack of chinks and differences within the delegation. Inside reports said that there were no differences and those members who had expressed their wish to meet the separatists were not opposed by any member or by the Government of India. In fact it was left to the choice of the members whether they wished to meet the separatists and even those who had not been invited to the meeting. These reports said that the PDP patron, Mufti Mohd. Sayed, and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, had set the stage for a meeting between some members of the delegation and the separatists. The Mufti, during his latest visit to New Delhi, had persuaded those who matter in the union capital that the purpose of the All Party delegation would prove a meaningless exercise if the members did not meet the separatists. When he had been told that separatists, especially, Geelani, Molvi Umar and Mailk, had announced that they will not meet the members of the All Party delegation the Mufti had suggested that if the separatists were not prepared to meet the team from Delhi let the team members meet them (separatists) in their houses. And when Omar Abdullah too suggested the same thing the dice was cast in favour of an interaction between the team members and the separatists. Since the BJP and its allies were not in favour of team members visiting the houses of separatists a via media was adopted. Under this it was left to the members to convey to the Government whether they would meet the separatists or not and those who favoured a meeting with the separatists were assisted by the Government agencies in reaching the residences of Geelani, Molvi Umar and Malik. Both the Mufti and Omar had tried to convince Delhi that if it wanted to break the ice, even if the chill did not disappear, some members of the delegation were required to have a session with the separatists. It is not important whether the team from Delhi had the mandate on meeting the separatists or not. What is important is that atleast some members of the team have been able to bring these separatists out of isolation. Even if they were able to see their writ runs in Kashmir they had developed, during the last three months, some element of coyness which resembles a bride who had entered into the house of her in-laws recently. Reports said that after the ice had been broken one should not feel surprised if more meetings take place between the two sides. This is what is needed to making a beginning as far as finding a solution to the current turmoil is concerned. |
