Over 60 KP youth, refugees taken into preventive custody | A day of arrests, protests in Jammu | | Kunal Shrivatsa EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 21: Contrary to the tense atmosphere in Srinagar, even as Jammu welcomed All Party led delegation to a calm and relaxed environment today, a it was a 'day of arrests' and protests as more than 50 activists of different organizations were detained as a precautionary measure to foil their bid to stage demonstration in front of Chief Minister Omar Abdullha's official residence. Several Jammu based groups having varied political affiliations particularly those representing displaced Kashmiri Pandit community who were waiting anxiously to meet the delegation had to face wrath of Police at many places. The 'adamant' administration did not give a go-ahead to different deputations to meet the delegation. Some groups including SOS, an organization representing refugees of 1947, Youth All India Kashmiri Samaj (YAIKS) and All Migrants' Camp Coordination Committee made vain attempts to reach the Chief Minister's official residence at Wazarat Road. The heavy posse of police deployed at different places in and around city resorted to mild cane-charging and force to disperse the crowds proceeding towards CM's residence. The police also took more than forty persons into preventive custody however they were released later on. More than dozen PoK refugees were detained as they held a protest sit-in at Bikram chowk against being denied permission to meet the all-party delegation. The refugees, who had come to Jammu at the time of partition in 1947, were staging a sit-in at a park in Bikram Chowk when the police forcefully removed their dharna which led to a scuffle between SOS activists and police personnel. One of the protesting refuges accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of having issued directions that "PoK refugees should not be allowed to meet the delegation." "It is ironical that Omar, who on the one hand, facilitated the delegation members' meeting with the separatist leaders, and on the other hand he ordered a crackdown on the real sufferers," Rajiv Chuni, SOS president told reporters. "The protesters were trying to create a law and order problem," a police officer said, explaining the police action. If it was not enough, the police whisked away YAIKS activists, who were sitting on a peaceful protest hunger strike in front of Press Club, Jammu against the all party delegation's visit to the state. Agitated by the police action, the protesting KP youth said that it was totally unwarranted as they were staging a dharna only and they were not at all proceeding towards CM's residence. Similar scenes were witnessed at Domana where hundreds of Kashmir Pandits under the banner of All Migrants' Camps Coordination Committee heading towards CM's residence were stopped which resulted into a minor clash between the KPs and police. More than 30 persons were arrested there including KP leaders Ajay Bharti, Desh Rattan and others. Lodged at Domana Police station for the whole day, the detained persons were released late in the evening only. The migrants putting up at Purkhoo, Muthi and Mishriwala decried the government's decision for not allowing them to meet all party delegation members. Police apparently resorted to this action apparently to foil the attempt of the Kashmiri Pandits, particularly from camps to stage a demonstration in front of Chief Minister's residence. The police also arrested 60 activists of Youth All India Kashmiri Samaj who were on a token hunger strike in front of Press Club here for the last two days protesting against the failure of the State Government to issue the orders in favour displaced youth who were selected for various Government jobs three months back under PM's special employment package. Earlier in the day, the AMCCC activists led by its chairman Ajay Bharti and president Desh Rattan who were in a minibus were taken into custody after reaching Domana by the police. Desh Rattan and Ajay Bharti while condemning the police action said that the by inviting some ``yes men'' in the meeting the Government was trying to suppress the real voice of the community which will not be allowed to happen. They, while criticizing the Government decision said that in Valley the delegation despite the refusal of Hurriyat leaders to meet it went to their residence to ascertain their views while the Government deliberately tried to avoid the genuine leaders of the KPs to meet the delegation. This shows the double standards and the discriminative attitude of the State Government which has never been sincere towards the solution of the problems of the Pandit migrants from the Valley, they added. Panun Kashmir led by Dr Ajay Chrungoo in a statement issued here today said it is highly intriguing that attempts are being by the authorities, responsible for making arrangements for the visit of all parties delegation to Jammu, to obstruct, deny and discuss Panun Kashmir in Jammu to meet the all parties delegation. |
