J&K out of contest as 4 more teams enter QFs

JAMMU, Sept 22: Suffering a 2-1 loss in the hands of formidable Goa, hosts Jammu and Kashmir faced an easy exist as the third day of the ongoing 56th National School Games under-19 Football witnessed four more teams reaching the knock-out stages of the quarterfinals at different venues, here today.
Though the only hope of survival in the championship was just a win away, but it was not an easy task to beat the side like Goa. Undoubtedly, hosts put in great efforts to clinch a win but the visitors did not allow them to succeed in their game plan knowing that it was a game of survival for them too.
Earlier, Goa took the early lead when Alber Gonsalvis netted the ball for first goal in the 5th minute. The lead was equalized by Rahul Ghai in the 22nd minutes but only to go down in the 34th minute with Rakesh Kumar scoring second goal for Goa. The second half of the play remained barren as both sides turned offensive.
With today's win, Goa qualified for the quarterfinals from group-B with two wins. J&K drew a blank and third team in the group, Haryana had a win and a loss to their credit.
Meanwhile, four more teams today qualified for the knock-out stages of quarterfinals. These included IPSC, Chandigarh and Kerela as also Goa. While IPSC topped group-C with two wins, Chandigarh made it to the quarters from group-E. Third team reaching the knock-out stages was Kerela.
Since tomorrow is the last day of the league round, two more groups of F and G will deciding other teams reaching the quarterfinals. In group-F, the winner of tomorrow's tie between Uttar Pradesh and Tripura will decide the seventh and the contest between Chhatisgarh and Tamil Nadu (group-G) will name the eighth team.
Chandigarh boy makes hat trick
Besides J&K's loss to Goa, the highlights of the third day of the competitions included hat trick by Chandigarh forward, T Johny Chand. Johny scored three goals in a row striking in the 22nd, 30th and 49th minute to guide Chandigarh to a big 6-0 win over Bihar in a group-E league tie today.
The Detailed Results: Uttar Pradesh bt Rajasthan 3-2; Orissa drew Tripura; Kerela bt Himachal Pradesh 6-0; Goa bt J&K 2-1; IPSc bt Vidhya Bharati 4-1; Chandigarh bt Bihar 6-0; Tripura bt Rajasthan 3-2.
