Roller skating rink in shambles | | | early times report JAMMU, Sept 22: AS the country is preparing for Common Wealth Games (CWG), hundreds of crores of rupees have been spent on the games and here in Jammu and Kashmir the already existing sports facilities are declining. The only Roller Skating rink at the MAM Stadium under the State Sports Council need to be smooth and free from any hurdles so that the upcoming skaters can practice on it. With many cracks in the rink, it has been closed for skaters . The skaters are forced to practice on roads in the MAM Stadium and Jammu University which could prove fatal. Skaters said last year in the month of December, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, R S Chib during a visit assured them that the repairing work would be done with in couple of months, but even after passage of 10 months nothing has be done so far. One of the sports persons, Ranjit Singh said that for the last many they have been demanding the repairing of the skating rink but the concerned authorities' didn't take any action. President, Jammu and Kashmir Roller Skating Association, S S Chib said that they have been demanding from last fifteen years from the State Sports Council to kota stone the floors of the skating rink. "We have been given assurances every time", added Chib. Secretary, State Sports Council, S A Leharwal said "the council has decided to build a hall for Squash, Fencing, Wrestling and Chess on the land where skating rink is situated at present, new skating rink will be constructed by demolishing old Hall, where games of Billiards, Wrestling, and Weight Lifting used to played". And it would take some time, added Leharwal. |
