Provide adequate transport facilities to the fruit growers: Tarigami | | | EARLY TIMES Report Jammu, Sept 22: CPI (M) has urged the Govt. to take immediate and concrete measures for transportation and marketing of apple fruit. In the prevailing situation the fruit growers are confronted with severe difficulties with regard to transportation, high fares and other requirements in the post harvest process of the apple crop. The fruit industry in the valley has suffered losses to over 200 crores during the last couple of months and if the trend continues the fruit industry in the state will get badly affected, thereby posing a threat to the state's economy. In a statement issued here today, State Secretary CPI (M), Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, said that apple being the prime cash crop of the state fetches income over 2000 crores per annum to the state and assures direct and indirect livelihood to lacs of people, adding that a contingency plan was imperative to provide adequate trucks to the fruit growers so that the horticulture harvest reaches to the outside market. Tarigami suggested for utilizing SRTC truck fleet for transportation of the fresh fruit, besides arranging trucks from the outside state. He urged upon the government to regulate the fares as the transporters are charging exorbitant rates from the growers for transportation of fresh fruit to outside market. He also demanded availability of packing and other facilities to the fruit growers and effective implementation of Market Intervention Scheme. While reiterating his demand for adequate compensation for the growers, whose crop suffered losses due to natural calamities, Tarigami stressed for keeping a provision to compensate those growers, who may suffer any damages due to prevailing circumstances." |
