BJP apprehends rigging in LAHDC elections
9/22/2010 11:11:15 PM
EARLY TIMES report
Jammu, Sept 22: The state BJP has apprehended large scale rigging in the elections for Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council scheduled to be held on October 16 in Leh.
BJP however cautioned the administration and the election authorities to ensure free and fair polls to the Hill Council.
Addressing a joint press conference at party office, BJP State President Shamsher Singh Manhas and former Patron of Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF) Thupstan Chhewang said that administration in Leh appears to be working in tandem with Congress and National Conference to create situations in favour of their candidates since LUTF has recently merged with BJP and it has caused ripples in the camps of ruling alliance.
Citing one such instance, the BJP leaders said that Stanzin Takpa, who is proposer for one candidate Tsering Namgial from Lingshet constituency in Leh has been missing and is unable to appear for scrutiny which was scheduled to take place on 21st September at 11 a.m. This is a very serious happening which is seemingly done just to facilitate the candidate from the other group win unopposed. BJP asked the Election Commissioner to take serious note of it.
Further Manhas and Chhewang narrated the incident which took place at Timgmasgang constituency where the efforts were made to stop candidate from filling the nomination form but due to interference personally by Chhewang such nefarious efforts were stopped.
They alleged that another incident took place in Limayuor where again similar efforts to abduct the proposer was attempted but the efforts were thwarted.
In the light of these facts BJP leader appealed to the Election Commissioner to postpone the election in Lingshet Constituency and since earlier police had failed to provide protection to the candidates and proposers.
The BJP leader also highlighted that the grave possibility of rigging on the pretext of most significant flaw that during the election instead of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot boxes which have every possibility of rigging have been introduced. These steps are important for very free and fair election if the state government intends to.
BJP state spokesperson Dr. Nirmal Kamal was also present in the press conference.
