Open women's Cooperative bank in Doda district: Wani | | | early times report Jammu, Sept 22: Abdul Majid Wani, senior congress party leader and MLA from Doda constituency has demanded opening of Women's Cooperative Bank branches in Doda district. Addressing a deputation of people from Marmat and Bhagwa blocks of Doda at his residence, Wani said that the Government of Jammu and Kashmir and Jammu Credit Cooperative Ltd have jointly taken initiatives to empower women by launching women credit cooperative banks in rural areas of the state. Reportedly eight to nine branches of the Women's Cooperative Bank have been recently opened in Jammu & Samba districts, with employment of 40 to 50 female employees. Wani assured the deputation that operations of this bank for women shall not be confined to only semi urban areas of Jammu & Samba district. Since more than 70% women are living in rural and far off areas of our state, prime focus of this cooperative sector bank should be to open sufficient number its branches in remote & rural areas. It is only the rural women who need to be empowered the most. In our State, gender disparity more prominent in rural areas, despite efforts from various quarters, continues to persist and plague our society. Wani exhorted upon Women's Cooperative Bank authorities to take this challenge for empowerment of rural women seriously with prime focus on opening of new branches in villages of neglected & backward areas instead of towns or semi-urban areas in the periphery of the winter capital of the state.Because of social constraints, poor & mostly not so educated women in backward & hilly areas of Doda district, by tradition, feel reluctant in visiting banks as their staff structure is male dominated. MLA Doda further said that Doda constituency is one of the most neglected one with regard to cooperative sector; even other cooperative sector organizations like JAKFED, Super Bazar and other cooperative sector banks have negligible presence in this backward and mostly mountainous hilly region. Wani assured the delegation that with the intervention of J&K Cooperatives Minister Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma, Women Cooperative Bank shall open its branches in Bhagla-Bharath, Mohalla-Gundna, Goha-Marmat and Bhagwa-Dessa.
