Afraid that Sept 24 Ayodhya verdict can spark tension, CS, DGP ask forces to get ready to deal with situation | Mobile, landline services likely to be jammed after verdict was announced | | BHARAT BHUSHAN EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 22: Apprehensive that the Ayodhya verdict on September 24 could trigger trouble, chief secretary S S Kapoor and police chief Kuldeep Khoda today said "all possible security arrangements will be made to ensure peace in the region and no one will be allowed to create communal tension". Taking into account the sensitivity of the issue, a senior police officer also hinted at jamming the mobile and landline services in the state where SMS service is already banned. As parents planned not to send their wards to schools on the judgement day, government could announce a holiday in schools and colleges as a standard measure on such "tense" occasions. Various Hindu and Muslim organisations have already appealed to their communities to respect the court verdict. Chief minister Omar Abdullah and union minister Farooq Abdullah said that if one community was aggrieved, further legal recourse would be open to it as it could approach the Apex Court. Omar hoped that all sections of people would help in maintaining peace, order, harmony and tranquility, and said no one needed to have any apprehensions. To review law and order situation in the region, the chief secretary, principal secretary (Home) B R Sharma and the DGP took a meeting of senior police and civil officers at the police control room here today. The meeting discussed all security related matters and asserted that all possible security arrangements would be ensured for the maintenance of peaceful atmosphere in the region. Kapoor directed the civil and police machinery to take necessary steps for maintaining law and order in the region. Nobody should be allowed to vitiate the atmosphere at any cost, he added. Khoda asked senior police officers to maintain close coordination with each other and directed them to take firm action against anyone who tried to disturb peace and tranquillity in the region. Sufficient forces were available to deal with any situation in the region, he told the meeting. The meeting was also attended by CRPF special DG N K Tripathi, IG (security) Farooq Ahmed, IG CID (headquarters) B Sriniwas, IG (armed) Ravinder Kotwal, deputy director IB, Commissioner, special bureau, and deputy commissioner M K Diwedi. The verdict in the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri masjid dispute would be announced at 3:30 pm on September 24 by the Lucknow bench of the high court. Union home minister P Chidambaram also appealed for peace and calm today ahead of the verdict. Sources said the central government had already decided to jam mobile phone services in some parts of the country on September 24. Mysore administration today announced that mobile phone network would not function for three hours soon after the delivery of judgement. Andhra Pradesh also hinted at blocking the short message service (SMS) facility on mobile phones on September 24. Sources said the precaution was being considered to stop the circulation of provocative SMSes relating to the dispute. Some other states were also likely to take a similar decision. Karnataka has already declared a two-day holiday in all educational institutions on Friday and Saturday, besides imposing orders restricting gatherings to less than five people, and banning liquor sale in the state. Meanwhile, the Centre warned the media and all interested parties against rushing into hasty conclusions about the court verdict on the disputed site. Media has also been asked not to speculate about the verdict till it has the copy of the operational part of the order on September 24.
