UN need to examine mind set of Kashmiri protesters | | | The tragedy with the united Nations is that it's debates and policies usually are governed by the attitude and stand of those members who exercise greater influence on the world body because of their ability to fund various UN aided projects. And the way the UN security Council handled a complaint submitted by India on the Pakistan attack on Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 had created a perennial problem in the Indian subcontinent instead of resolving it as the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had expected. And the latest is the statement from the UN secretary General,Ban Ki-moon on the ongoing turmoil in Kashmir.Ban has called for an "immediate end to violence in Kashmir following weeks of confrontation between the Indian troops and tthe Kashmiri protesters."This was stated by Ban's spokesman,Martin Neseriky.Neseriky in his statement said that Ban urged "calm and restraint by all concerned."He stated that the Secretary General "regrets loss of life due to the hostilities."Ban had,in August, issued a similar statement calling for "calm and restraint"but later withdrew it saying "it was just an advisory not a statement from him."Well it is not yet certain whether Ban will stick to the statement issued by his spokesman,Neseriky,or withdraw it the way he did it in August.Even if he sticks to it there does not seem anything that could provoke India or cause any discomfort to Delhi.W hat Ban has stated has been earlier said by various Indian leaders. And even those supervising law and order in Kashmir have been telling the protesters to observe calm and restraint.Unfortunately,Ban has not been able to fathom the basic cause behind the turmoil in Kashmir.Had he done so he would have become wiser on one count. He would have realised that if there has been "loss of life' in Kashmir it is the result of the provocation from the protesters to the security forces. If Ban expresses regrets over the loss of life in Kashmir he echoes the sentiments of several thousand people in Jammu an Kashmir besides political leaders. But Ban should have gone deeper and examined factors that led or forced the security forces to open fire on protesters. If one goes by the CRPF record one feels astonished to find that over 1600 CRPF jawans had been injured, some having fractured their legs, others their arms and yet others their jaws,in heavy stone pelting resorted to by the protesters during the last three months. The UN officials need to examine other reports which indicate the determination of the protesters in defying the curfew restrictions and later setting ablaze police stations, security pickets and vans of security forces. At a number of places protesters attempted at lynching security personnel and they were saved when their colleagues opened fire which forced the demonstrators to stage an immediate retreat. Both Srinagar and Delhi have been trying to convince the protesters that the Government was ready to discuss the issues and the problems that had angered people so that a solution was found. The protesters seem to be unprepared for a dialogue because they have been led to believe that their demand for azadi was going to be conceded shortly. It is under this illusion that the protesters have showed guts for indulging in violence on a large scale. The separatists had felt so much encouraged by the way people responded to the calls for shutdown and rallies that they refused to meet members of the All Party delegation who had spent a day on Monday in Srinagar. However, some members demonstrated politial segacity and travelled to the houses of Syed Ali Shah Geelani,Molvi Umar Farooq and Mohd.Yasin Malik. The two sides met and the level of anger and hatred in the mind of the separatists seems to have witnessed rapid dilution .Delhi is getting ready to announce attractive political and economic package for the troubled state and here lies the duty of the UN and other developed nations to mount pressure on Pakistan to keep its hands off Kashmir.Once it materialised Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness peace and normalcy, free of terrorist activities.
