BJP assails coalition for manipulating unopposed victories | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 24: The BJP has assailed the Congress-NC coalition for manipulating “unopposed victories” in the on going poll process of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LADHC). Regretting that the leaders of these two parties have learnt no lesson from the past for playing foul with the electoral process, the BJP leaders alleged that in the real sense they are the guilty for secessionism and other such like problems in Jammu and Kashmir for which the entire country is facing the music. Commenting upon the reports that the Congress has managed two uncontested seats in the 26-member LAHDC, the leader of the BJP Legislators Party, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta recalled this type of foul play is not new for the Congress and NC but the most unfortunate part is still being perpetrated even after the previous two Assembly elections had raised hope and confidence among the people that the democratic sense has begun to prevail but the behaviour of the Coalition would badly affect the confidence of the electorates in the ballot. Prof. Gupta recalled that in 1951 elections, the National Conference led by Sheikh Mohd Abdullah had manipulated the victory of large number of its nominees and the then Praja Parishad was forced to boycott the first elections after the independence of the country. Thus, in this Assembly there was not a single member of the opposition because of this folly. And Sheikh Mohd Abdullah had to face not only his down fall just within two years but was jailed by his own colleagues indicating that the stick of God is silent and no one should feel that ones crime does not meet the ends of justice. In 1957, the Bakshi led National Conference managed as many as 39 and in 1962 elections, the NC manipulated 34 “unopposed Victories” in the House of 75-member Assembly but still he had to face not only humiliation but also a jail from his the hands of his own colleagues. This again proved that God is great. There was again foul play in 1967 Assembly Election and 22 members to the Assembly were declared elected “unopposed”. This type of foul play continued though it was for the first time in 1972, after the extension of the jurisdiction of the Election Commission of India the people in almost all the constituencies except one, for the first time got the opportunity to see the ballet papers. Prof. Gupta asked the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to look what is happening in the local elections of Ladakh as the sort of vandalism being perpetrated is bound to generate bickerings and many tensions. He also urged upon the State Governor to pay his heed to the happenings in Ladakh as this being a quite sensitive area bordering China and a break to the crime against democratic process being committed by the NC-Congress Coalition there.
