Chib for opening Psychiatric unit in health centres
Inaugurates XI national conference on Psychiatry

JAMMU, Sept 24: Emphasising the need of providing every health centre with psychiatric unit in view of today’s stressful and perplexing time, Minister for Medical & Technical Education, Mr. R.S.Chib, today said that the Centre and the state government is focusing serious attention on promoting this vital facility in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the XI Annual National Conference of Indian Association of Private Psychiatry, 2010, at Jammu, the theme of which is Social and Cultural Transition, Mental Health Perspective.
The conference is being organized by the Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College, Jammu.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that it is a privilege for the state to host such a conference in which a large number of experts from outside the state are participating. He said that such conferences are of immense help in working out multi-pronged strategies to extend much needed conveniences to the people of the state.
Giving a detail of this facility in the state at present, the Minister said that the Psychiatry Hospital in Srinagar is one of the eleven excellent centres in the country. He said that the government is planning to make available one senior Psychiatrist in each district hospital.
Chib said that Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah, recently inaugurated the Institute of Mental Sciences in Jammu and the work on which is in full swing. This 30 bedded institute with latest techniques and specialists will cater to the medical needs of Psychiatric patients.
The Minister said that the government is taking keen interest in upgrading the existing hospitals at tehsil and district level with the provision of Psychiatry centres. He said that the availability of this significant service in the healthcare centres of the state will help to provide good treatment for various mental ailments adding that, the people also have not to move outside the state to avail this facility.
Among others Principal Medical College, Dr. Rajinder Singh, Dr, Jagdish Raj Thapa, prominent Psychiatrists, Dr. V.K Razdan, Dr. Avdesh Sharma, Dr Rajesh Nagpal, Dr. Vijay Nagaswami, Dr, Margoob Mushtaq, Dr. Abhishek Chowhan were also present on the occasion.
