Early Times Report
Leh, Sept 24:
Despite the tall claims of the government to rehabilitate the flash flood victims in Leh, more than one and half month has already elapsed and not a single permanent structure has been completed till date.
The Prime minister who had himself visited the region and announced one hundred and twenty five crores package for Leh apart from other necessary assistance. The prime minister had even assured the victims that their houses will be completed before the ensuing winters and for that he would visit the region after two months so that the structures for the victims would be complete on time.
So far, only a sample prefabricated structure has been constructed so far at Solar camp Choglamsar and rest of the victims are putting up in tents. In skurbuchan village, the ‘National Bamboo Application’ has constructed four such pre-fabricated bamboo houses for the victims and are planning to construct another twenty such prefabricated houses in Skurbuchan only.
Now with the advent of chilling winter in Leh, the people who are putting up here in tents are really worried about their future condition and the authorities have started claiming to build houses for them.
When contacted the Chief Executive Councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, Tsering Dorjay said ``we are not constructing houses for the victims instead we are giving two lakhs cash amount for those who have lost their house completely and one lakh for those whose houses are partially damaged’’. He said apart from this, the government will give subsidy on timber and will make available all the construction materials for them. He said more than six hundred houses are completely destroyed and around four hundred houses are partially destroyed.
The authorities are now planning to shift the victims who are presently putting up in tents to government buildings like school and other buildings so that they could save themselves from coming winter.
