Cong opposes trifurcation demand for J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 24:The state unit of the Congress continues to oppose to the demand for the trifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir on the plea that the regional unity is a symbol of religious tolerance and secular traditions. Not only this, the congress leaders, majority of them belonging to the Jammu region, are said to have conveyed to the party high Command the need for keeping in view the aspirations of the people of the regions of Ladakh and Jammu. A senior Congress leader, who is in New Delhi in connection with the participation in panel discussion, has plainly stated that while deciding on some political and economic package for the troubled state, the central Government should not ignore the sentiments and aspirations of the people of the regions of Ladakh and Jammu. The leader has stated that in terms of political and financial empowerment people of the regions of Jammu and Ladakh have received a raw deal which needed to be rectified. Though the state unit of the Congress is in favour of measures that could ensure restoration of peace and normalcy in the Kashmir valley, it has cautioned the centre against taking any step that could enrage the feelings of the people of the Jammu region. One senior Congress leader, who is a member of the council of ministers headed by Omar Abdullah, said that if "we have been able to share power, first with the PDP ,between 2002 and 2008 and later with the National Conference since 2008, it is the result of peoples' support in the Assembly elections of 2002 and 2008. Earlier, Dr Farooq Abdullah had forged an alliance with the Congress between 1987 and 1990 because of a number of seats the congress had won from the Jammu and region. Another Congress minister said that Omar Abdullah should be given more time to tackle the situation in Kashmir which essentially was of political nature than a mere law and order problem. He also wanted that the current alliance between the Congress and the National Conference should be allowed to continue.
