| St. Agnes College (Mangalore Univ) wins Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award | | Award initiative brought into the country by Coca-Cola India in Association with FICCI | | New Delhi | October 28 President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter personally presented the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration to St. Agnes College (Mangalore University). This was the first time that the prestigious award was presented to a partnership program outside the United States of America. The coveted award has been brought into the country by Coca-Cola India in association with Federation of Indian Chambers Of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) - Country's apex industry body. The annual Carter Partnership Program recognizes educational institutions for outstanding community-reach program involving students, faculty as well as local communities. The award constituted a citation, a special handcrafted golden globe trophy and a cash prize of US $ 10,000. The 2nd and 3rd runner's up i.e. Punjab University & Aligarh Muslim University also received a citation and a cash prize of US $ 3000 and US$ 2000 respectively. The award was given in presence of Shri Kapil Sibal, Honorable Minister for Science And Technology And Earth Sciences, Government of India and Aparna Sen, noted film actor, director.
At the award presentation ceremony, President Jimmy Carter said, "This will be the first presentation of this award outside the United States, and it is particularly significant to me that India is the next country to embrace this recognition of service. Many years ago my mother, who was a nurse and Peace Corps volunteer, ministered to Indian citizens. That experience touched her deeply, and the emotion she felt, and also the love for India has filtered through to me through her recollections'.
The President further added,"Carter Partnership Awards celebrate schools, communities, and businesses working together to make a difference in the lives of people in need. They nurture a culture of service among young people and teach valuable lessons on the importance of cooperation. Candidates for these awards offer immediate benefit to struggling families and lifelong gain for participating students."
Out of the scores of applications received from various educational institutions in India, the three short-listed Universities included - Aligarh Muslim University for its Pulse Polio Immunization Program in UP, Punjab University for its literacy program and St. Agnes College, Mangalore University for its Watershed development and Management program.
The winner was selected by the Foundation based on the combined merits of each program, giving careful consideration to how closely the program applicants matched the award guidelines.
According to Atul Singh, President & CEO, Coca-Cola India said: "The Coca-Cola Company was established in Georgia, USA the same state where President Carter was born, raised and later became governor. Beyond this shared legacy President Carter and Coca-Cola share a strong belief in the benefit of working for the local communities. As an example our Company is actively spearheading water sustainability and conservation programs in India. We have so far commissioned more than 220 rain water harvesting structures in 17 Indian states both at bottling plants and in the local communities. We are constantly trying to benefit the communities where we operate."
The Carter Partnership Award serves as one of the highest recognitions for academic-service learning. The Award aims to be a powerful motivator for the academic community to develop community service programs in their curriculum and encourages the student community to inculcate values of selfless service and empathy towards the community.
At the award ceremony, Saroj Kumar Poddar, President, FICCI said 'FICCI is happy to be associated with the Carter Partnership Award which seeks a unique collaboration between the youth in universities and the disadvantaged communities. Such experiences during college years lead to the creation of an eclectic person whose capabilities are bound to be enhanced in the market place of a liberalizing and globalizing India".
