Mughal road likely to be extended to Rajouri | Govt takes up matter with GoI, funding expected after DPR submission | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Sept 24: Though Mughal road is considered from Baflias to Shopian but the state government has reportedly approached Government of India to approve its extension from Baflias to Rajouri which will change the nomenclature of Mughal road as "Rajouri-Shopian Mughal Road". The extension is expected to demand Rs 150 crore for widening of Rajouri-Baflias route which is single lane at present. Sources said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approached Union Minister for Surface Transport Kamal Nath and discussed the matter with him. The Chief Minister has reportedly demanded full funding from Government of India. Sources said that Chief Minister is sincere to extend this road from Baflias to Rajouri. Although Centre has yet to agree on funds, sources said that GoI has given nod to prepare a detailed project report. The road presently under GREF and government has issued direction to it to prepare detailed report. Sources said that Deputy Commissioner, Rajouri, Ghulam Ahmed Khawaja has consulted GREF in this regard and has conveyed them to prepare project report. When contacted, Executive Engineer Roads and Buildings BR Chadgal admitted that Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Ghulam Ahmed Khawaja is very serious to construct double lane Mughal Road from Rajouri onwards and he has already taken up the issue with the government. "Our DDC has disclosed in Public Darbar at Thanamandi that Chief Minister has taken up the matter with Union Ministry of Surface Transport and it may get final nod very soon", Chadgal said adding that the road is presently single lane and it is the need of the hour to make it double lane. "The road is under GREF and they have to prepare DPR for the same but our DDC is well in contact with GREF and its work is expected to be started vary soon following approval of GoI", he added. It may be pertinent to mention here that Mughal Road, presently from Baflias, is likely to be officially opened for two-way vehicular traffic next year. However, unofficially traffic has already been started after Himalayan Motor Car Rally held in the month of July this year. Rajouri-Baflias road is presently single lane and it cannot bear the load of a Highway and that is why before formal opening of Mughal Highway, the government wants to widen it. The road is 41 kilometers from Rajouri to Baflias and there are at least 10 kilometers of area under forest department which may create hurdle in the project. Widening of this route will lesson load on Jammu-Poonch Highway via Bhimber Ki Gali and it will also shorten distance to reach Poonch via Dehra-Ki-Gali. |
