Hamal likely to take over as V-C BGSBU | | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 24: If the political tantrums do not force the state government to go into reverse gear, Rector of Bhaderwah campus Prof. Irshad Hamal is likely to take over as vice-chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU). Sources in the Chief Minister's office said that name of Hamal figures at serial number 1 in the selection panel submitted by the search committee to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. They added that if the situation does not deteriorate in the Kashmir valley again, formal appointment orders of VC for BGSBU are likely to be issued on Monday. Sources confirmed that Hamal is a lone Jammuite in the fray for the coveted post of the vice-chancellor of the university which has remained in the news for all the wrong reasons for the last three years. Hamal would take over from cop turned academician and acting vice-chancellor of BGSBU Masud Choudhary in the first week of October. Sources further said that the final panel includes four names, of which three including that of Prof. Irshad Hamal belong to Jammu and Kashmir while as fourth one is from outside the state. They said that Hamal has been kept at number 1 for being the lone member in the panel from Jammu region having rich experience of both administration and academics. Sources said that committee constituted to recommend panel for the appointment of vice-chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah University (BGSBU) after completing the work had recommended names of Prof. Irshad Hamal, Prof. Mustaq Peer and Prof. Nisar Ganai from the state and a professor, whose name could not be confirmed from outside the state, for being appointed Vice-Chancellor of BGSBU. Highly placed sources said that present Chief Minister Omar Abdullah kept the process for the appointment of new vice-chancellor of BGSBU in limbo for more than a year while noted literary figure and an MLC of National Conference (NC) Mohammed Yousuf Taing preferred not to attend meetings of search committee for keeping Masud Choudhary on the coveted post. Resident of Kishtwar in Doda district, Prof. Hamal has received Ph.D degree from Jammu University for his work on 'Cytotaxonomy of the umbellifers of Kashmir Himalaya'. He has 23 years of teaching and 30 years of research experience. Prof. Hamal has published 42 research papers and 18 abstracts besides participating in 22 national and international symposia, seminars, conferences and workshops. He has supervised 5 M.Phill and 4 Ph.D students. Dr Hamal has membership of 12 University bodies/Research organizations. In a short tenure of just 45 days, he provided sound leadership in academic development of the University. It needs to be mentioned here that Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University came into existence by an Act of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly called the Jammu & Kashmir Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Act No. XVI of 2002. The university is nurtured by the Jammu and Kashmir Wakf Council. |
